Hawaii Roads

Last modified: September 2008

Southeastern area of the Island of Hawaii
These shots were taken in March 1998 and July 2008.

Video of HI132 and HI137

Much of HI 132 (left photo) is under a canopy of trees. The photo on the right shows HI 137 between Kapoho and Pohoiki, and is adjacent to the shore, just to the left. At one point near here, a sign reads "Road floods during high tide". (2008 photos)

More 2008 shots of HI 137. The shot on the left with the Banyan tree is near Pohoiki, and has shoreline graves next to it (there are a few shoreline graves in this area). The shot on the right is further south.

Near HI 137 Kalapana
1998 HI 137 shots. At the time, the road was only one lane wide (note the slight widening in the 2008 shots above). HI 137 ends (right photo) at a lava flow, at what once was a black sand beach in Kalapana. In 1998 there was just a juice stand here, in 2008 it was much busier here, with a snack bar and a few other businesses. There is a trail here over the lava flow to a newer black sand beach.

2008 photos: Smoke from where the lava hits the sea, seen from HI 137 near Kehena in the left shot, a few miles before the end of the road in Kalapana. On the right is the view from the lava field at the end of HI 137 in Kalapana.

Lava flow blocking HI 130 Lava end of HI 130
HI 130 ends at a lava flow in these 1998 shots. This road once connected to the Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. As of 2008, you can drive over a few of these flows to a lava viewing area.

Chain of Craters Road end
Lava flow closure of Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, shown in 1998. The road is now closed a few miles earlier. This once connected to HI 130 (see the picture above this one). The big plume of smoke to the right is where the lava meets the ocean.

Sunset from HI 130, south of Hilo. Mauna Kea in the distance.

Hawaii Belt Road - southern route: Kona to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
July 2008 unless noted differently.

HI 11 south of Kona.

South Point road South Point
The road to Ka Lae (South Point) is very narrow. This is the southern-most point in the United States. (1998)

Coming around the south end of the island near Honuapo. What appears to be clouds in the upper left is smoke from Kilauea.

Smoke from Kilauea, seen from HI 11 a few miles south of the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

White coral rock as graffiti on black lava. There are miles of this along HI 19 north of Kona.
