Australia Highways

The photos below are from a trip to Sydney, Cairns, and Melbourne in 2007.
Part 1: Signing and shields
Part 2: Australian road photos & links

Sydney Harbor Bridge

Southbound on the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Train tracks on the right.

View of the Sydney Opera House from the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

Near the toll plaza on the south end of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

Castlereagh St, Sydney
Similar to Britain, some of the bus lanes are paved red in Sydney.

An approach to the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

A Sydney Monorail station at the end of an offramp.

Above: Part of the park at Sydney's Darling Harbor is under the freeway interchange shown in this photo.
Below: The park under the interchange, near the LG Imax building shown in the above photo. It wasn't too noisy, considering the location.

Melbourne has a toll network called Citylink.
On the left is the Bolte Bridge, and the right shows the Sound Tube Tunnel, with part of the Melbourne International Gateway seen in the distance. This is a sculptural work comprising of a giant yellow beam hanging diagonally across the road and a row of smaller red beams alongside the road. I found an aerial view of the project on another website. I also found a web site with construction photos.

Cook Highway north of Cairns
Typical barrier cable used in center dividers, and in this case as a shoulder barrier.

A roundabout in Cairns.
Pickup cars, like the one shown here, are popular and called "utes". Most of these are Holdens (GM in Australia) or Fords.

Kuranda, Queensland
This type of pickup bed is popular in Australia (one on a ute in the background).

Double Island from the Captain Cook Highway (route 44) between Cairns and Port Douglas, Queensland.

Another view from the Captain Cook Highway north of Cairns.

B420 near Phillip Island, Victoria.

The Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road, Route B100 southwest of Melbourne, winds along the coast. It reminded me of California 1 south of Big Sur. Note the "drive on left in Australia" sign, there were many of these signs along this road, probably due to its popularity with tourists.

A convenient sign for travel times.

A twisty section near Lorne.

Near Angelsea.

Off the Great Ocean Road near Port Campbell is a formation known as the Twelve Apostles.
