4 POINT ROLL
-This is a 4 STEPprocedure for self teaching a 4 pointroll.
-You learn the points first, then begin adding elevator and rudder controls as you gain proficiency.
-This is important. You must be able to do the points without thinking about them before you go on so you can concentrate on coordinating the other controls.
-It takes time to learn the 4-point roll with all its coordination, don’t rush.
-Do not think you can learn the whole procedure in one flight.

-A fast airplane makes the 4 point roll easier, but nearly every plane with ailerons can perform a 4-point

STEP I: LEARN THE POINTS
-The first step of learning the 4-point roll is to learn one using ailerons only.
-Your learning goal in this phase is to be able to stop the plane on the points accurately. This will take time if you have never tried one before.
-Do not rush into the other steps. You should be able to do the points automatically, without thinking about them, before you go on.
-A 4-point roll like this, without the use of elevator orrudder, will look like the plane performed it on an arc instead of a straight line. This is how most full scale planes do a 4-point roll.
0. Raise the nose slightly, 10 degrees or so, then release all the elevator.
1. From this nose high position, put in aileron to bank 90 degrees, then release it. It is not necessary to use full aileron unless your plane rolls very slowly
2. Put in aileron again to roll to the inverted position
3. Put in aileron torollto the other knife edge
4. Put in aileron to roll back to level flight.
-Reviewing the stick movements, they are:Raise the nose, release, roll, release, roll, release, roll, release, roll, release.
STEP II: Add in DOWN ELEVATOR .
-Don’t start this step until you have mastered hitting the points.
1. Put in aileron to roll to the first point (knife edge), then release.
2. Put in aileron to roll to the second point (inverted), then release.
-Immediately blip in a small amount of down elevator (FORWARD stick) and release.
3. Put in aileron to roll to the third point (knife edge), then release.
4. Put in aileron to roll to the fourth point (level flight), then release.
-Your sequence is: ROLL. ROLL- DOWN. ROLL. ROLL OUT.
-Your 4-point will seem to be longer in the middle when you put in the down elevator. The points will even out when you learn to put in all the corrections.
STEP III: Add in SAME DIRECTION RUDDER.
-Down elevator was easy, adding rudder is harder because you are using your other hand.
-Make sure you can hit the points and coordinate in down elevator before you go to rudder coordination.
-We are going to coordinate the last point using rudder in the same direction as you are moving the ailerons because it is easier to get your left hand to follow in the same direction as you are moving your right.
1. Put in aileron to roll to the first point (knife edge), then release.
2. Put in aileron to roll to the second point (inverted), then release.
-Immediately blip in a small amount of down elevator and release.
3. Put in aileron to roll to the third point (knife edge), then release.
-Put in rudder the same direction as you have been moving the aileron stick, then release.
-Most right-handed fliers roll right. Make your left hand follow your right hand
4. Put in aileron to roll to the fourth point (level flight), then release.
-Your sequence is: ROLL. ROLL-DOWN. ROLL-SAME RUDDER. ROLL OUT
STEP IV: Add in OPPOSITE DIRECTION RUDDER .
-Master the down elevator and the same direction rudder before you try this last correction.
-Just before you start the roll, think of which your fingers will be moving. Don’t think right or left, just think (for a right roll) my right fingers move to the outside of the transmitter case for the roll so my left fingers go out also.
1. Put in aileron to roll to the first point (knife edge), then release.
-Blip in opposite direction rudder. Right roll, left rudder. Left roll, right rudder.
2. Put in aileron to roll to the second point (inverted), then release.
-Immediately blip in a small amount of down elevator and release.
3. Put in aileron to roll to the third point (knife edge), then release.
-Put in rudder the same direction as you have been moving the aileron stick, then release.
-Most right handed fliers roll right. Make your left hand follow your right hand
4. Put in aileron to roll to the fourth point (level flight), then release.
-Your sequence is: ROLL-OPPOSITE RUDDER. ROLL-DOWN. ROLL-SAME RUDDER. ROLL OUT
