After 20 years as a wife, mother and community volunteer, and 10 years as an office manager, Mary Fonseca embarked on a career as a free-lance writer. Her articles have been published in national magazines such as Nation's Business and Americana, and in regional magazines such as Mississippi and Louisiana Life. Her Louisiana Life series, "Say 'Yes' to Louisiana," merited first place awards from the Press Club of New Orleans in 1990 and 1991 and inspired her to write Weekend Getaways in Louisiana and Mississippi, published in 1993. Weekend Getaways in Louisiana followed in 1996. This popular travel guide was designated a "Best Book" about the state by Travel and Leisure magazine.
Mary and her husband are celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary this year. Their five children, 12 young grandchildren, and activities in St. Clement of Rome parish organizations keep her busy, but she manages to squeeze time for writing into her schedule. Louisiana Gardens, was published by Pelican Publishing Company in 1999. Mary has spoken to more than 75 clubs and organizations about her books and has guided viewers to New Orleans' unique French Quarter gardens on the nationally televised garden show, The Victory Garden.
