LONG-Jessie
Born in 1889, near Greenwich, Kansas, Jessie worked from the time she was fifteen years old. She had taught school for six years when she married Robert Long, a resident of Augusta.
Ever since she moved to Mulvane in 1944, the town has had her full loyalty. She and her husband came here from Derby, at the request of several businessmen, who urged the couple to move their hardware store here.
When her husband died in 1954, Mrs. Long concentrated her full attention on the hardware business. Time she had previously devoted to bookkeeping for her husband’s dealership went into expanding the hardware line to include a wide selection of gift items.
About the same time, her son, Robert, and his wife, Mildred, joined her in operating the store. Although Robert later accepted a job in Wichita, Mildred continued to work with her mother-in-law until the store closed in July, 1973.
Jessie has passed to her just reward, and the town misses her.
