Banks
Warren and Herman had the first bank in Mulvane. Herman sold out to Warren shortly after the bank opened. The bank had a capitol stock of $15,000.00. The Warren bank did not succeed and went into receivership, with John Crum appointed to administer the closing.
Amos Skinner started the Mulvane Bank in 1883 with a capitol of $25,000.00. We do not know what happened to this bank.
The Mulvane State Bank was started next in 1886.
The Farmers State Bank started in 1906 and lasted until the last part of the 20’s, ending in a tragic closing for many of the Mulvane community.
The MULVANE STATE BANK was organized July 12, 1886, by W. G. Egan, L. D. Hill, C. D. Beebee, Thomas Fawcet, J. N. Trickey and S. M. Wilson. These men knew of the need for a bank in Mulvane because of the community’s growth during the first six years of its existence. They held a meeting and W. H. Egan was elected president; T. W. Fawcet, vice president; L. D. Hill, cashier and C. D. Beebee, assistant cashier.
The business was located in the Egan building and opened its doors July 15, 1886, with a capital stock of $30,000.00, according to the minute book of that date.
The fire of April 12, 1893, destroyed the bank, except for the walls and vault. A new bank building was built at the same location, now 203 W. Main Street.
C. A. Hough of Nashville, Mich., joined the bank in 1895, succeeding T. W. Fawcet as vice president. The minute book of Feb. 20, 1896, shows the capitol stock had been reduced to $5,000.00. The bank joined the Kansas Bankers Association in 1898.
Stock was sold to some new men and some bought out others in 1899. W. C. Robinson was elected vice president to succeed Thomas Fawcet (minute book). Adam Hufbauer, M. D. Canady, Fred Wagner and possibly one or two others became stockholders.
On Jan. 2, 1900, C. F. Hough, Sr., the son of C. A. Hough, was appointed director and cashier of the bank, replacing L. D. Hill who had served fourteen years as cashier. The next year W. C. Robinson was elected president succeeding W. H. Egan. Mr. Robinson was president until his death in 1934.
We find from a bank advertisement in 1911 that officers were W. C. Robinson, president; Adam Hufbauer, vice president; C. F. Hough, cashier; Sam Campbell, who joined the staff in 1904 as assistant cashier; M. D. Canaday, director and Fred Wagner, director. There were fourteen stockholders and the capitol stock was in surplus of $40,000.00.
Upon the death of Adam Hufbauer, Sam Kimble came into the bank in 1911 and served until 1933. C. D. Canaday succeeded his father, M. D., and was elected director and vice president in 1923 and held this position until 1956. He died in 1960.
Harry Nelson joined the staff in 1929 and faithfully served the bank until his death. C. F. Hough, Sr. died in 1933 and his son, Claude, Jr., assumed management of the bank, while his mother, Mrs. Mildred Hough, served as director. One year later she was elected president and served until 1955. Claude, Jr. left the bank in 1949 and went into banking in Corvallis, Ore. Frank Shaw succeeded W. C. Robinson into the bank and served from 1935 until his death.
In October, 1931, the bank installed the very latest protection such as a time lock safe, night burglar alarm system, bullet-proof glass, steel mesh enclosed lobby and "federal tear gas."
In 1949 F. L. Carson, Sr. and Frank, Jr. purchased controlling interest in the bank from Mildred Hough and Claude Hough, Jr. Frank Carson, Jr. became cashier and was elected president to succeed Mrs. Hough in 1955.
Like the town, the bank has continued to grow and now is situated in a beautiful new building on the northeast corner of First and Main Streets.
Frank Carson is married to the lovely Leslie Parker of Wichita and they have four children and two grandchildren.
Capitol funds are one million dollars, resources thirteen million dollars. The present officers are: Frank Carson, II, chairman of the board and president; H. J. Lucas, executive vice president; Jim R. Edwards, vice president; Pauline L. Slack, cashier; Doris R. Norden, assistant cashier; Frank Carson, III, installment loan officer and John V. Madsen, installment loan officer. Directors are Walter Hand, Robert H. Campbell and Leslie Carson. It should be noted that Wade Walton was director for many years prior to his death.
