Mustang Recycles goals for 2008
January 1, 2008

Since today is the start of a new year, it is the time plan for the coming year.

Chocolate Festival

My wife and I helped out at a table for the Friends of the Mustang Public Library’s Chocolate Festival last February. This year Mustang Recycles will have our own table. Of course we will not be giving out “recycled” chocolate; we’re looking for a chocolate mold shaped like a recycling symbol. Contact us if you’re interested in helping—we need people to sit at the table and people to bring homemade chocolate treats.

Second Recycling Survey

I will ask the City of Mustang to conduct another recycling survey this spring. The City sent out a survey in September 2006 to gauge interest in a recycling program. The results were mixed. 73% of respondents supported a weekly curbside recycling program; however, only 34% were willing to pay the $2-3 per month to support the program. We believe the existence of a recycling center has increased both the awareness of the importance of recycling and the willingness to pay for curbside recycling.

After all, a curbside recycling program would not shut down for holidays and people would put their recyclables on the curb in front of their own houses.

Remember that no elected official wants to vote for a utility rate increase that the people do not support. In order to have curbside recycling, you must be willing to pay for it.

Western Days

We had a booth at least year’s Western Days and really enjoyed talking with everyone that stopped by. We will be back again in 2008.

Continued Growth

Since the center opened on October 21, 2006 we have had 2,733 visits. Our record number was 105 in one day. We expect to break that record in the coming year. With this growth, more volunteers are always welcome! Please consider giving Mustang Recycles the gift of one hour of your time as a volunteer.
