Greetings Mustang,

The time has come for Mustang to have a city wide recycling program. Currently, paper can go to a school, aluminum cans can go to the can muncher behind Taco Bell, and used items can go to the Salvation Army; however, there are no options in Mustang for plastics, glass, and tin. Since moving to Mustang a year ago, I have had to take my recyclable materials to Yukon.

Recycling diverts waste going to the landfill expanding the life of the landfill and provides low cost materials for local manufacturing.

A recycling program would save the city money because it has to pay the landfill for each ton it entombs there.

This saving could pay for the recycling program and would also allow a more equitable pricing system for trash pickup. Since I recycle, my trash cart is often half empty at the end of the week. Yet I pay the same as families that fill their trash cart and use all five of their extra trash bags.

If the city implemented a Pay As You Throw program, it would encourage households to recycle by reducing the base trash pickup fee and placing an extra fee for bags of trash.

If you are interested in having a recycling program here in Mustang, like Yukon, Edmond, and Union City already have, please contact your city council representative, the mayor, and me at MustangRecycles@cox.net so we can present an organized face to the city council.

Thank you,

Brian Figgins
