Frequently Asked Questions
HOW DO I TELL IF THE PLASTIC IS #1 OR #2?
Most plastic items are marked with a number within the recycle
symbol. This number indicates the type of plastic it is.
Plastic #1 is PETE. The most common containers are 2 liter soft
drink bottles.
Plastic #2 is HDPE. Milk jugs and laundry detergent containers
are usually this type.
Plastics #3 – 7 are not recyclable at our recycling center.
CAN PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS BE RECYCLED?
Our recycling center does not accept plastic shopping bags. These
bags can be recycled at Wal-Mart.
CAN BROWN PAPER BAGS BE RECYCLED?
Brown paper bags are recyclable in the cardboard bin but not
in the paper bin.
CAN YOU RECYCLE ALUMINUM FOIL?
Our aluminum vendor does not accept aluminum foil or pie pans.
WHAT CARDBOARD CAN BE RECYCLED?
Both corrugated and non-corrugated cardboard can be recycled.
Exceptions:
• Wax-coated cardboard (i.e., ice cream cartons, orange
juice cartons)
• Foil-coated cardboard (i.e., aluminum foil boxes, some
toothpaste boxes)
Cardboard boxes that held food should be scraped clean to avoid
attracting vermin.
DO LIDS NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM PLASTIC CONTAINERS?
While lids can be recycled with plastic containers, they should
be removed so the plastic containers can be compressed more easily
at the processing center.
DO PLASTIC CONTAINERS NEED TO BE CRUSHED?
It is helpful to crush plastic containers such as milk and water
jugs to save space in the recycling bins.
DO LABELS NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM TIN CANS AND PLASTIC CONTAINERS?
No, labels do not need to be removed. However, it is important
to ensure that these containers are clean.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE NOT ACCEPTED?
Items that cannot be recycled include:
• styrofoam
• aluminum foil and pie pans
• leftover food
• Pyrex glass
• window or plate glass
• strings, rope, and other bindings
• batteries
• any plastic items not marked #1 or #2
• scrap metal
We cannot accept plastics that held oil, antifreeze, paint thinner,
or pesticides.
CAN RECYCLABLE MATERIALS BE DROPPED OFF OUTSIDE OF OPERATING
HOURS?
City ordinances prohibit leaving anything outside the bins. Recyclable
materials left outside bins are not recycled; they are thrown
away.
