Say YES to Curbside Recycling! City survey coming soon
October 8, 2008

Hello everyone,

Last night the Mustang City Council approved the sending of a recycling survey in the monthly utility bill to residents.

The last recycling survey, sent September 2006, separated this into two questions:

• Do you want curbside recycling?
• Are you willing to pay $2-3 a month for it?

This appears to have lead to confusion on the part of many. Even in 2006 there was overwhelming support for curbside recycling as 73% of residents responded that they wanted it. However, only 36% of residents responded that they were willing to pay for it.

This time the only curbside recycling question will be “are you are willing to pay for it?’ If over half of the respondents are willing to pay for curbside recycling, I believe we will get it.

If you want curbside recycling, you need to:

• Say “yes!” on the recycling survey.
• Tell your friends and neighbors about the survey and encourage them to respond “yes!”

The next survey will not be sent until October 2010, which makes this survey extremely important. The City Council agreed to only consider sending a recycling survey every other October.

There is no guarantee that the drop off recycling center will be here for two more years. We have a small core of unpaid volunteers that is stretched very thin. It would only take one volunteer to move away, develop health issues, or get burned out from volunteering to potentially close the center. Each weekend 3 or 4 volunteers assist 100 – 120 households in two hours. We greatly appreciate our volunteers and usually ask them to work one Saturday per month, while my wife and I work every Saturday.

Please talk to everyone you can about the importance of the recycling survey and selecting yes for curbside recycling.

Thank you,

Brian Figgins
