In the name of God Amen. I Elijah Hubbs of Marshall County viz. considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory blessed be Almighty God for the same do make and Publish this my last will and testament in the manner and form following that is to say. first. I give and bequeath to my eldest daughter Kessiah Clegg children one dollar. I also give and bequeath to my second daughter Rebecca Clegg one dollar and I also give and bequeath to my youngest daughter Sarah Robison (Robinson) one dollar which said legacies I will and order shall be paid to the respective legates within six months after my decease. I further give and devise to my son Elijah Hubbs his heirs and assigns all that my message or tenement situated lying and being in Marshall County state of Virginia together with all of my other freehold estate whatsoever to hold to him the said Elijah Hubbs his heirs and assigns forever and lastly as to all the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate goods and chattels of what kind nature soever. I give and bequeath to my son Elijah Hubbs whom I hereby appoint my sole administrator of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th day of February AD 1845.

In the name of God Amen. I, ISAAC HUBBS of Marshall County and the state of Virginia, being of a sound, disposing mind and memory, revoking all others do make this my last will and testament as follows. To wit, I will and bequeath to my son, ISAAC HUBBS, that part of the place he now lives on as surveyed by John Dickey as follows. Beginning at a poplar at the head of a drain in my line and within said drain to my East line including all the land I now hold North east of said drain. To have and to hold the same to him and his heirs forever, and further I will and bequeath to my wife BARBARY HUBBS, all my personal property and real estate being the remainder of the tract that I now live on in Marshall Co. VA, or any other lands that I may possess to have and to hold during her natural lifetime, and after her decease I wish the remainder of my personal property and real estate to be sold to highest and best bidder at public sale and the proceeds of said sale after all my just and lawful debts are paid to be equally divided among all my children, that is, ELIZABETH HUBBS, GEORGE HUBBS, CATHARINE AMBLER, JOSEPH HUBBS, FANNY TEAGARDEN, BARBARY GRIMES, ISAAC HUBBS, REBECCA EARLYWINE, and to my daughter MARGARET PEARSON I will and bequeath five dollars and the remainder of what would be her distributive share. I will and bequeath to her daughter, AMEJANE CROW to be paid her by my executors when she arrives at the age of twenty one years, but in case said AMEJANE CROW should decease before she becomes 21 years of age, her share shall be equally divided among all my heirs. I hereby appoint my sons JOSEPH HUBBS and ISAAC HUBBS my executors of this my last will and testament. No business man in Marshall County is more thoroughly respected than W. O. Grimes, dealer in general merchandise at Glen Easton.  He is the son of John and Barbara (Hubbs) Grimes, the former of Washington County, Penn., and the latter of Belmont County, Ohio.  His grandfather, Isaac Hubbs, was a soldier in the war of 1812.  Owing to the fact that schools were few and far between, and the teachers, in many cases, incompetent, Mr. Grimes received a limited education.  His further advancement in this line was shortened by the brave step he took when but nineteen years of age, at which time he enlisted in the Third West Virginia infantry, Company I, and served with them until the discharge of the regiment in 1864.  But, still faithful in his country's hour of need, he re-enlisted in Company H, Seventeenth West Virginia infantry, and with it passed through the remaining trying years of the war, participating in the following engagements: Battles of Droop Mountain, Harrisburg, McDowell, and all of the principal battles in which his regiment was involved.  Mr. Grimes was an actor in the historic "Salem Raid," on which they were cut off from all supplies, and were forced to pull the heavy artillery over the mountains by hand, having no shoes for their feet, no food to satisfy the cravings of hunger, fording rivers through the ice, their feet frozen and their poor starved bodies benumbed with the biting cold.  It is honor enough for one man to be able to say that he formed one of the heroes of that expedition.  After the war Mr. Grimes traveled through the west for twelve years soliciting orders for nursery stock, in which he was very successful.  He then returned to the place of his selection, where he was married to Miss Martha Burley, the daughter of John and Susan (Ogle) Burley, old and highly respected residents of the county.  Mr. and Mrs. Grimes are the parents of four children: Susan, Charles, Elizabeth and Carton.  After his marriage he operated a farm for four years, then sold out and moved to Missouri, where he worked a farm for two years.  Again returning to Marshall County, he launched into the general merchandise business at Glen Easton, where he has since remained, having been very fortunate in his business.  Mr. Grimes is in the prime of life, having been born in 1842.  He is an honored member of the G.A.R., post No.77, and of the I.O.O.F., and is a staunch republican.

Isaac Jones Hubbs life resident of Marshall County, died this morning at 10:30 o'clock at his home in Glen Easton. He was 78 years of age.

 

Services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the late residence, followed by additional rites at 2:30 at Fork Ridge Universalist church. With burial in the church cemetery. He was born June 28, 1870, in glen Easton, a son of the late William Henry and Mary Miller Hubbs, and was a member of the Jr OUAM at Glen Easton.

 

Surviving are his wife, Alvilda Marshall Hubbs, three sons, Roscoe and Halley J Hubbs of Moundsville and Marion Kenneth Hubbs and a daughter, Mrs Malissa Rine, both of Glen Easton, 10 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

 

The body is at the Lutes funeral home and will be taken to the late home Saturday morning.

William Keith Grimes was born in Elm Grove near Wheeling, West Virginia on August 28, 1925. His father worked in a large city dairy for most of his life after coming to Wheeling from Jacktown, Pennsylvania. His ancestors are of North Irish ancestry and were Protestant Christians. He attended three grade schools in Wheeling and later attended Wheeling High School. He graduated from Wheeling High School in May of 1944; He had been drafted and was on active duty at Camp Blanding Florida at the time of his graduation. While William was attending high school, he enjoyed such classes as wood shop and also printing in which he specialized for three years. He was an active member of the high school band from the middle of his time in the eighth grade and through-out all of his high school years. He had even enjoyed the privilege of playing in the Wheeling Steel Corporation's "Musical Steelmakers' Orchestra" before being placed on active duty with the Army. While William was an Army Infantryman, he had the pleasure of sailing to Europe on the il de France; at that time, the third largest ocean liner in service. After he arrived in Europe, he spent five months with the United States Eighth Infantry, a regiment of the Fourth Infantry Division, as an infantry scout. After the Battle of the Bulge, he was hospitalized in England and later sent to Camp Butner General Hospital in North Carolina. From there, he was discharged from the Army and he spent two years at working and attempting to go to school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas.

 

In September, 1947, he returned to active duty with the United States Army; he was sent to Europe again where he was a member of the Army of Occupation. From 1948 to 1952 he served in four different Army bands in the European area. His last two years were spent in Berlin. While stationed in Berlin, He enjoyed the privilege of hearing The Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra, Radio RIAS Symphony, and the original post war tour of Marion Anderson. As a member of the 298th Army Band in Berlin, he also had the opportunity to attend the USAREUR Army band school at Dachau, just north of Munich. While he was a student there, he studied with Professor Doctor Hans Sachsee who was the head German music teacher at the school. After leaving Berlin, William visited his sister in Dallas Texas and then spent the summer of 1952 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. In the fall of 1952, he was sent back to Germany and was assigned to the new Corps area band for V Corps. This was the 84th Army Band. This band was stationed on the East German border area with the Armored Cavalry. The Armored Cavalry is the reconnaissance for the United States Seventh Army's V Corps. They have always been called the Border Belles!

 

While stationed with the 84th Army Band, it was located in a city named Fulda, Hessen; this city is famous for its Baroque architecture. It is also the seat of a Catholic Bishop. The young German fellow that then sang with his Chapel choir is Otto Carl Hartmann, today, one of Germany's best known opera tenors. He works at Radio Frankfurt.

 

Another very interesting personality that he had the privilege of meeting while being stationed in Fulda was a lovely table tennis champion; she had a fantastic fore hand slam and just as fantastic back hand slam. She also did beautiful and lovely needle-point with those hands. So he married her. She made him the proud father of two sons and proved that talented good fore hand and back hand slams makes a champ in other ways. His two sons found that is the trick of the champ in that you don't know which one is coming, the fore or the back. The first place in the United States that he brought his new wife was to Fort Lee, Virginia. To her, today, this is her home.

 

In April of 1964, he was again sent to Germany, Stuttgart, to be the First Sergeant of the famous (7 steps to hell) Seventh Army Band. While there, the band went to southern France to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Seventh Army world war II landings.

 

After leaving Stuttgart, he attended the advanced course (F-3) for senior NCO's at the School of Music at the Amphibious Base in Norfolk (Little Creek). From the school of Music, he went to Fort Bragg as a detachment first sergeant. From Fort Bragg, he went to Vietnam, to the 25th Infantry Division and the Tropic Lightning Band. He was the bands first sergeant and enlisted band leader for 1969 and 1970. In late 1970 he was sent one year at Fort Belvoir.

 

From Fort Belvoir, Virginia he returned to the 84th Army Band of V Corps again in Fulda. Along with many concerts, and parades both in Fulda and through-out the local area, the one thing he enjoyed most was taking his brass group to the border out posts in the Colonel's helicopter on Christmas Day. They played for the border troops but also for the people in East Germany, where carols is part of that religious opium of the mind.

 

In 1974, William and his family returned from Fulda Germany again to the 392nd Army Band at Fort Lee and the Petersburg area. On the first of March of 1976, he retired from military service as a Master Sergeant and made his home in Petersburg.

 

After his military retirement, he started attending school at John Tyler Community College and in September of 1977, he transferred to Virginia State University were he graduated with a degree in library science.

 

He was a faithful member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Petersburg, Virginia from January 9, 1977 until his death on November 28, 1987. He sang in the choir, served on the Church Council and as an active member of the Lutheran Church Men.
