Galician Polish Ancestors Ancestors - Barnett Family![]() Anna Berstling/Osiecki & Michal Baryluk "Mack Barnett" Sr.Galicia, Ukraine to Marathon County, Wisconsin
My Galician ancestors came from Galicia, a historic region in eastern Europe. Galicia, from the Ruthenian Galich (Halicz), was made up from a south east section of Poland including Krakow and Przemyst, and a south west section of the Ukraine including Lvov, Ternopal, and Stenisley. It was ruled by Austria.
Baryluk/Barnett – Osiecki/Berstling Family
Izydor Baryluk and Anna Weber had a son Michal Baryluk born in Galicia. Michal, at the age of 18, immigrated from Winnipeg, Canada to Detroit, Michigan with his uncle. Michal changed his name to Americanize it to Mike "Mack" Barnett. Mack then traveled to St. Johns for a year before moving on to East St. Louis and staying for about one year. In 1913, Mack moved to Minneapolis where he joined the U.S. Army. He served in World War I and was discharged in 1915. After serving his duty he returned to East St. Louis for a couple months and moved back to Minneapolis.
On Sept 6, 1916, Mack married Anna Osiecki in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They resided in Minnesota until 1922. They then migrated to the town of Reid in Marathon County, Wisconsin. The original homestead purchased by Michael "Mack" Barnett Sr. and Anna Osiecki, is still in the town of Reid and owned by the Young side of the family. The family was large, consisting of nine children. Some of the children returned to the Twin Cities in Minnesota, or on to Michigan, Illinios, and Milwaukee. Some of the children remained or returned to Marathon County, residing in Weston, Hatley, and Mosinee to farm or work their learned trades. Anna Osiecki was born in Barcice, Poland in 1892 to Józef Osiecki and Karolina Bersling. The Osiecki/Berstling family was of German descent. Joe Osiecki and family immgrated from Bremen, Germany aboard the "President Lincoln" vessel, and entered Ellis Island on May 28, 1909 and migrated to Minneapolis, Minnesota were the Osiecki Berstling family resided for the remainder of their days. My Polish ancestors established themselves in a Luthern church in the town of Mosine, St. John Lutheran, and Catholic churches in Hatley, St. Agnes and St. Ladislaus. Many of the family baptisms, marriages, and deaths were recorded at these parishes. Family History |
