Heathkit DX-60B Transmitter

This rig showed up at the March 2003 Fort Walton Beach, FL, hamfest. It's very dirty and the case is dented, but everything is there!

I cleaned the case and chassis. I replaced the crystal switch, crystal sockets, one rectifier diode, and several resistors. I also had to replace the modulator tube socket.

After getting the DX-60B working, I decided to try to improve the audio response. There are two very good articles on the DX-60 written by Bill Breshears, WC3K.  Fun with the DX-60, Electric Radio Magazine, May 2000 p20, and More Fun with the DX-60, Electric Radio Magazine, November 2000, p16. I applied several of the WC3K mods to the DX-60.

The major changes to improve the frequency response are:

1)      Remove R16 (1 meg)

2)      Change C30 to .005 uF

3)      On V5, insert 25uF/35 and 2.2 k (in parallel) between pin 8 and ground

4)      Remove C32 (.001 uF)

5)      Add 0.15 uF in parallel with R27 and C36.

6)  Change C17 to .001 uF.

Here's my 'new' transmitter in the shack

I use the DX-60B with a Gonset GSB201 MKIV amp. The unmodulated carrier output power level of the pair is 100 watts. Audio peaks run about 500 watts. Voice peaks on the DX-60 rarely exceed 100 ma. I have been receiving surprisingly good signal reports.
