The Heathkit RX-1 receiver was available as a kit from 1958 until 1964. It matches the Heathkit Apache transmitter. Weighing in at 52 pounds, it's a good mate to the Apache (approximately 100 pounds.)
The RX-1 is a double conversion ham band-only receiver covering 1.8 through 30 Mhz. It also has 27 Mhz coverage and coverage from 22 to 26 Mhz for six- and two-meter outboard converters.
Heathkit engineers were not thorough in their design of this piece of equipment. A standard RX-1 suffers from AGC problems, poor audio quality, distorted SSB and AM reception, a poor ANL, and it drifts.
Electric Radio ran a series of articles from November 1997 through January 1998 entitled "New Hope For Your Heathkit Mohawk" by Thomas Bonomo, K6AD. The author addressed each of these problems. He also wrote and article in the April 1999 issue entitled "Threshold-type AGC for Boatanchors."
I spent several days installing many of the K6AD modifications. These modifications have transformed a lousy receiver into one that is a pleasure to operate and to listen too. Thanks, Thomas Bonomo!
