I am an amateur radio operator. My call letters are N7RK. Amateur radio operators are also known as "hams". Hams talk to each other via radio using Morse code, voice, teletype, and other digital modes. Some hams also contact and see each other with amateur TV. Hams also have their own satellites and communicate using the satellite as a form of repeater. I prefer to work Morse code which is known as CW although you will find me on phone occasionally. I do enjoy working DX on 75 meter phone. |
I have been a ham since 1963. My first call was WN6IWX followed by WB6NRK. I liked the "NRK" enough that I changed my call to N7RK in 1977 in the first vanity call sign program. Here are some pictures of my stations over the years including my first station.
W6BAM, Shelley Trotter who is now a silent key got me started in Ham Radio in 1963. He was licensed in 1926. Here are some photos of his 1920's ham station along with a few other early photos
I also enjoy collecting and
restoring antique ham radio equipment which include
communications receivers and transmitters. In old radio
circles, these radios are known affectionately as
"Boatanchors", as most of them are heavy enough to anchor
small boats. Back in the 1970 and 1980s when all of the
solid state Japanese radios came into vogue no one wanted
the older gear and due to their weight, other hams would say
"use it for a boatanchor." I especially enjoy the pre-war
and early post-war receivers by Hallicrafters and National
such as the classic National HRO-5 shown on the right. Here
are pictures
of some of my boatanchors and broadcast
radios I recently finished reworking a
Breting 12 receiver from 1935. As a result of this, I have
put together a page on the Breting Radio Company showing
their line of receivers and a page showing my Breting 12.
Follow
this link for the Breting Radio Company web
page. I presently have four Howard
receivers and was unable to find much about this company. I
put together what information I do have and it is presented
here in hopes that some other collectors will find it
useful. Follow
this link for the Howard Radio Company web
page. I also have three Patterson
receivers and have very little about this Los Angeles
company. I have put together what information I do have and
it is presented here in hopes that some other collectors
will find it useful. This is under construction and new
photos and schematics will be added.

Growing up, I loved watching Laurel and Hardy on Saturday mornings. Thanks to video cassettes, I can still watch Stan and Ollie and share them with my two children. My 14 year old daughter and 13 year old son love watching them too - a nice break from all of the modern cartoons.
Here are some good Laurel and Hardy websites. Laurel & Hardy Society - Way Out West Tent Th Official Laurel & Hardy Website |
