Kelly L. DeSenti, Director of Disability Support Services
Marymount University

Kelly DeSenti has worked in higher education for the past 16 years and directly in the area of disability support services for the past 6 years. Kelly holds an undergraduate degree in English; a graduate degree in counseling and psychological services with a concentration in student personnel in higher administration; and a post graduate certificate in counseling. Kelly has served at several universities in the capacity of residence director, assistant dean of students, and presently as the director of disability support services at Marymount University. In various positions Kelly has also served as an academic, career and personal counselor as well as a coordinator of orientation programs for both students and parents. Kelly is a generalist in the area of disability support services and as a one person office works with a variety of students both with and without diagnosed disabilities. In everyday operations Kelly meets regularly with students to assist them in the area of academic life management.

Patricia T. Lunt, Dean of Students, Alexandria Campus
Northern Virginia Community College

Prior to her appointment as Dean of Students at the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College in 2004, Dr. Lunt served as a counselor and adjunct instructor at the College for close to ten years. She earned a BS degree in Community Development from the Pennsylvania State University (1972), her master’s degree from The George Washington University (!979) and her doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (2004). Her research focused on adolescents’ willingness to use online counseling. In addition to her counseling and administrative background, Dr. Lunt facilitates training sessions for government and non-profit organizations. Her topics include conflict resolution, diversity in the workplace, team facilitation and sexual harassment in the workplace. A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Lunt is a long time resident of Alexandria where she is active in local city issues. In her spare time, she enjoys regular gym workouts, biking and kayaking.


Philip W. Meilman, Director of Counseling and Psychiatric Services

Prior to his appointment at Georgetown University, Dr. Phil Meilman served as Director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Cornell University. He has published extensively in the area of collegiate alcohol use and college mental health issues including a self-help book for students entitled Beating the College Blues and a newly-released book for professionals entitled College Mental Health Practice. Dr. Meilman earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University magna cum laude in 1973 and his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from UNC Chapel Hill in 1977.


Brian L. Watkins, Director of Parent and Family Affairs, University of Maryland College Park

Before joining the Division of Student Affairs at Maryland, Brian served as assistant director of Academic Enhancement at DePaul Univeresity (IL). During his tenure at DePaul, Brian played a fundamental role in the development of effective initiatives for new students and parents, and was responsible for the creation of several innovative programs for orientation. Prior to that time, he was the director of campus activities and student involvement at Arcadia University (PA). While at Arcadia, Brian also served as adjunct professor in sociology and held a special appointment from the university president on the Affirmative Action Committee. Brian earned a Master of Education degree in higher education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Hope College (MI). Brian was the recipient of the 1999-2000 Outstanding New Professional Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Region II, and a nominee for the 2000 C. Shaw Smith New Professional Award from the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA). He is a published author on diversity issues in higher education.

Ayana Watkins-Northern, Director of Clinical Services and Chief Psychologist, Howard University

Dr Ayana Watkins-Northern has been the Director of Clinical Services and Chief Psychologist at the Howard University Counseling Service for the past eight years. She serves as adjunct faculty as needed in the counseling and clinical psychology programs at Howard University. Dr. Watkins-Northern has been a faculty member of the Washington School of Psychiatry’s Group Training Program for sixteen years. She also maintains a private practice. She earned a bachelor of arts degree and a masters of art degree from Howard University. She received her Ph.D. from American University. Dr. Watkins-Northern has also done extensive post graduate work in the area of group counseling, group psychotherapy and group process. She holds memberships with APA, AGPA, A.K.Rice Institute and the Washington-Baltimore Center for the Study of Group Relations. While she has done many conference presentations for professional organizations, she has also been a member of many consulting staffs for group relations conferences and training conferences. Of particular importance is Dr. Watkins-Northern’s work with the university population. She has more than thirty years of experience with this population. After traveling internationally and working in clinical settings in other parts of the east coast, she decided that the university setting was of greater interest. She also felt there was a rapidly growing need to provide a full range of psychological services to that population. Consequently, she accepted the offer to return to Howard University and join the staff of the University Counseling Service.
