Tom and Abby - A Delicate Balance
Disclaimer: The show eight is enough and its characters do not belong
to me. And no profit will be made of the following short story.
We open in the entry foyer, as Abby, Mary & Joannie are talking and
getting ready to go out for the evening. All are dressed very
casual – jeans etc. Tom is on the telephone with Dr. Max, "Oh,
Max
you've got to be kidding. I've been looking forward to this game
all
week. Can't you get somebody to cover for you? We could
hold the
game here … everyone seems to be going out tonight, so it should be
quiet." Tom is disappointed with Max's response. "Alright,
alright,
next week then. Good luck with your patient. I'll talk to
you
later."
Abby overhears the conversation, "Tom, what happened?"
Tom is disappointed and angry, "Aw, Max has a patient in ICU and he
can't leave, Bernie's in-laws are in town and David's out with his
new girlfriend, which leaves us with only three guys…which means we
won't be playing poker tonight!"
Abby sees Tom is upset about the cancellation and tries to lighten
the mood, "I'm sorry Tom. I know how eager you were to make up
for
last month's losses!"
Tom gives her a `very funny' glare. "Now what am I going to do
with
myself tonight? You girls are going out, Nicholas is at Irving J.
Moore's for the night and Tommy has a "gig". I sure hope there is
something good on T.V."
Abby quickly responds, "Why don't you come to the movies with us?
It's supposed to be a great movie. It's that new political
thriller
with ---. I bet you'd like it!"
Joannie and Mary quickly agree, "Yeah Dad, come with us." Joannie
adds, "It's gotten great reviews and besides, when's the last
time
you went on a date with three attractive women?!"
Tom looks at Abby, "Well, one is usually more than I can handle!"
Abby chides back, "Don't worry we'll go easy on you. Of course
you
better bring you're wallet – this could be an expensive date!"
They
all laugh and Tom goes upstairs to get his coat and wallet.
At the theater, Tom, Abby, Mary & Joannie are all waiting in line
for
tickets. Tom complains, "Oh, I knew I shouldn't have come.
This
place is crazy. What happen to the good old days? When I
was a kid,
going to the movies was like going to the theater – now it's more
like a circus!"
Abby tries to appease him, "Oh, Tom try to relax. You might just
enjoy yourself."
Joannie adds, "Yeah, Dad It's not quite like the `good ole days' –
you know, before they invented sound, but then Jaws wouldn't have
quite the same impact without the "da-dum, da-dum"!" and she grabs
his arm.
Tom glares at Joannie, "Very funny!"
All the girls laugh and Abby says to Tom and Joannie, "Why don't you
two wait here and get the tickets and Mary and I will get the
popcorn. Any special requests?"
Tom glumly says, "Yeah, how about a couple of aspirin?"
Mary and Abby look at each other, shake their heads and walk off to
the refreshment stand.
A few minutes later Joannie and Tom have gotten the tickets and are
waiting for Abby and Mary to return when suddenly a man heads towards
Tom with his hand extended and exclaims, "Tom Bradford. How the
hell
are you? It's been years."
Tom is taken aback at first, but then recognizes the man, "John
Fitzgerald!" They shake hands enthusiastically. Tom
inquires, "It
has been years. How have you been? I didn't know you were
back in
town? Where are you working?" John responds, "Oh, I'm still down
in
San Diego – plugging away at the Herald. I'm just up for a few
days. My daughter got married last year and she and her husband
are
living here in Sacramento." John turns to Joannie, "Speaking of
daughters, this must be one of your lovely daughters – all grown
up?" Tom says, "Yes, yes this is Joannie. Joannie you
remember me
talking about Fitzi? He and I started out together at the
Register
I'm not sure I would have survived those early years, if I didn't
have Fitzi here to break up the monotony!"
Joannie smiles, "Yes, of course, Mr. Fitzgerald, it's nice to see
you."
Just then, Abby and Mary return.
Tom attempts to introduce them, "John, I want you to meet…"
John interrupts, "Ah yes, two more beautiful Bradford daughters!"
John extends his hand to introduce himself, "John Fitzgerald. You
probably don't remember me, I'm an old buddy of your Father's – we go
way back. We started out at the Register together. But you
kids
were barely teenagers, when Mazy, that's my wife, and I moved down to
San Diego! We used to keep tabs on all of you Bradford's over the
years by catching Tom's columns once in a while. It's been a
while
since I've seen one, however. Boy, you girls have really grown
into
young ladies." He rambles on as he shakes Mary and Abby's
hands, "Oh, we really miss Sacramento – lots of great folks, like
your Mom and Dad. We were shocked when we heard about your
Mom.
What a shame, she was a terrific lady."
Abby shoots Tom a confused "help" look and he tries in vain to get a
word in. "John…"
Fitzi just continues in his excitement. He turns to Abby and
says, "So, which one are you? The doctor or the actress?"
Abby is stunned and unsure of what to say, "Aw, neither actually.
I'm Abby."
John is clueless, "Abby, hum…I don't remember that name, but you know
what they say, the minds the first thing to go" he hits Tom in the
arm, "right old buddy!"
Tom finally gets a chance to speak, "Well, actually John, Abby isn't
one of my daughters. I remarried a few years ago, Abby's my wife."
Joannie and Mary smirk at the awkward situation and John
apologizes, "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize. Well, Abby,
it's a
pleasure to meet you." He turns to Tom and gives him another hit
in
the arm, "Tom Bradford, you old dog. How'd you manage to convince
such a beautiful woman to marry YOU?!"
Tom is relieved to clear up the awkward situation, "Aw, well just
lucky I guess!"
John replies, "Yeah, well congratulations. That's great I glad
for
you both."
Tom and Abby both awkwardly say, "Thanks." Then Tom introduces
Mary
as the "doctor".
John is uncomfortable and looking for a quick retreat, "Well, I got
to get going, I just stepped out of the movie to get some popcorn –
Mazy's going to think I got lost!" He shakes Tom's hand again,
"Tom,
it was great to see you. We won't be in town long, but maybe we
can
get together next visit. It's been too long." Tom
says, "Sure that
would be great." John shakes Tom's hand again and gives the girls
a
quick wave, "It was nice to meet you all, take care." And he
walks
off.
Tom looks annoyed and a little embarrassed. Joannie tries to break
the tension by linking arms with Abby and saying, "Hey sis, we'd
better get inside before we're late for curfew!"
The girls smile and they all head for the theater.
A few days later Tom & Abby drive into a hotel parking lot and get
out of the car. Both are dressed for an evening out. Tom
begins to
complain, "I hate these things. Do I really need to be
here? I
won't know a sole."
Abby tries to humor him. "If it's any consolation, I won't know
many
people either."
Tom replies, "So why are we going at all?"
Abby is growing frustrated with his lack of cooperation, "Tom, we're
going, because it's important to me and my career. How many times
have I endured long, boring evenings with the publishing world elite
and their boring wives, who can barely carry on a conversation about
anything beyond shopping and lunch at the country club? I haven't
been at the University long and it's important for me to get to know
people. Especially if I ever want to get my proposal for this new
class approved. Besides, Lorraine wants me here and she's my
boss,
so please try to be cordial – for me. We don't have to stay
long, I
promise. "
Tom puts his hands up in surrender, "I'm sorry, you're right, I
promise to be good!"
Abby flashes a grateful smile and takes his arm as they walk inside.
Later at what appears to be a cocktail reception, Tom and Abby each
have a drink and are talking to a group of people. They seem to
be
having a good time. Abby introduces Tom to a woman who has just
approached.
"Sharon, I'd like you to meet my husband, Tom Bradford. Tom, this
is
Sharon Turner. Sharon is a professor in the journalism
department."
Abby turns to Tom and says, "In fact, Sharon has been very eager to
meet you…"
Before he can respond or Abby can explain, Sharon jumps in, "Yes,
Tom, I'm a big fan of your column. In fact, I would love for you
to
be a guest lecturer in my journalism seminar course. It would be
a
real treat for my students to get a chance to …"
Tom gets tangled up in a conversation with Prof. Turner as Lorraine
Thompson, the Dean of Education and Abby's boss, approaches.
"Oh Abby, just the person I was looking for. I have someone
that I
would like you to meet. He used to teach here at SU, but now he's
down at UCLA. He's in town doing research for a book he's writing
on
the effect of modern sex roles on the educational system." Abby's
eyes light up, "Lorraine, you're kidding, I mean that's what my class
proposal is on." Lorraine begins to lead Abby
away. "I know.
That's why I want you to meet him. He's a terrific guy and I have
a
feeling the two of you can help each other out." Abby puts her
drink
on the tray of a passing waiter and quickly motions to Tom that
she'll be right back.
Abby follows Lorraine through the crowd to where two men are
finishing up a conversation. Lorraine taps on the back of one of
the
men and he turns around. Lorraine begins to introduce Abby to the
visiting professor, "Dr. Abby Bradford, I'd like you to meet…"
Both Abby and the other professor are a little stunned and at the
same time, each says the other's name with great
surprise, "Abby?" "Michael?" In unison, "Hi." They quickly
embrace.
Lorraine is surprised as well, "Oh, I take it you two already know
each other?"
Abby says, "Ah, yeah."
Michael adds, "It's been awhile, but yes…"
Lorraine says, "Great, then I'll leave you two to catch-up" and she
walks away.
Michael is still surprised, but obviously very happy to see
Abby, "Abby, I can't believe it, how have you been?" To which she
responds, "Good, very good and you?"
He is staring at her and instead of answering her question, he
says, "You look wonderful, just as beautiful as ever."
Abby modestly replies, "And you're just as charming as ever."
Michael grins and says, "So you did it. You got your
doctorate.
That's great!"
Abby smiles, "Yeah finally, I finished last year. I fact, I
just
joined the staff here at the University a few months ago."
Michael appears to be truly happy for her, "Well,
congratulations.
That's terrific."
Abby responds, "Thanks. Of course I have you to thank... in part,
at
least. If it weren't for your encouragement, I never would have
had
the guts to go back to school in the first place."
Michael deflects the compliment, "Oh come on, you're a natural.
You
would have found your way back eventually." Abby grins a little
and
Michael coyly inquires about her name change. "Did I hear right?
(Referring to Lorraine's introduction) Did she say, Abby
Bradford? I
assume that means you got married sometime during the last five
years?"
Abby answers, "Yes, I did. In fact, he's here tonight, I'll
introduce you."
There is a bit of an awkward pause. Michael is clearly
disappointed
to hear Abby is no longer available but he is a gentleman. "Well,
I
knew you'd find the right guy eventually." He adds
sarcastically, "Of course, I'd hoped that it would be me."
Then
adds sincerely, "but... I'm glad for you - really."
Abby looks down and then back up at him. "Thanks. And you?"
"Me? Oh, no such luck…yet." Michael quips, "I've kind of given up
on
relationships for a while – work manages to keep me pretty busy these
days."
There is a slight pause, then Abby takes advantage of the opportunity
to change the subject away from personal matters, "So, tell me about
this book your working on? Did Lorraine tell you I'm trying to
put
together a class proposal on practically the same thing?"
Michael responds, "Really? Well, I guess great minds really do
think
alike!" He then eagerly tells her about the book and they get
into a
discussion about the subject as it relates to Abby's class
proposal.
Meanwhile, Tom is still wrapped up in his conversation with Professor
Thompson, but he has managed to glance over periodically as his wife
speaks to this man across the room. His curiosity is
peaked. He
doesn't recognize the man. He looks to be in his late thirties or
early forties -- tall and good-looking. She certainly seems very
friendly with him. He keeps touching her arm and Tom saw how they
embraced after being introduced. He finally manages to escape
from
his conversation with the Journalism professor and makes his way over
to Abby and the `mystery man'.
Abby is so engrossed in her conversation that at first she doesn't
notice Tom. Once she does, she quickly introduces the two
men. "Oh,
Tom, I'd like you to meet Dr. Michael Donovan. Michael, this is
my
husband, Tom Bradford."
Michael and Tom shake hands and Michael sincerely says, "Tom, it's a
pleasure to meet you." Tom nods his head, still confused as to
who
he is.
Abby says, "Michael is an old friend of mine. In fact, he's
the
person who convinced me to go back for my Ph.D. in the first place!"
Tom isn't sure how to respond, especially since he isn't quite sure
what Abby meant by `old friend' – what kind of friend he
wonders? "Oh, really."
Michael attempts to joke, "Yeah, well I couldn't convince her to
marry me, but I did manage to convince her to go back to school!"
Tom gives his best fake laugh and tries to act like he's not
surprised by the news that his wife was once involved with this man
enough that he asked her to marry him! "Ha, ha...so, Michael, are
you teaching here at the University?" (Hoping the answer is no!)
Abby looks to gauge Tom's reaction. She knows how jealous he gets.
Michael answers, "No, I used to, but I've been teaching down at UCLA
for the past five years or so."
Abby is eager to move the conversation away from her past
relationship. "Michael is in town to do some research for a book
he's working on about the effect of modern sex roles on the
educational system. Can you believe it? I'm trying to
draft this
class proposal on a subject he's been teaching for a couple years and
is in the process of writing a book about!"
Tom is less than enthusiastic about the prospect of his wife working
with an old boyfriend and it shows in his tone. "That is ironic."
Michael doesn't notice, but Abby is aware of Tom's obvious lack of
enthusiasm but before she can say anything to defuse the situation,
Michael turns to Abby with a sincere offer, "I'm only in town for a
couple weeks, but I'd be happy to give you some help with your
proposal. I know what a challenge it is to get new class
proposals
approved. In fact, I have the results of this great study that
was
done at Stockholm University. It's amazing, the European's are so
much more in tune to the effect of gender differences on adolescent
learning."
Abby is quickly re-engrossed in their conversation. "I know. I
was
reading about an elementary school in Duesseldorf that has tried to
eliminate gender bias by…" Meanwhile, Tom feels like a
third wheel.
After a few minutes, a waiter interrupts. "Excuse me, Dr.
Donovan,
there is a phone call for you at the front desk."
Michael thanks the waiter and says to Abby, "It's probably Jenny." He
turns toward Tom to clarify, "She's my daughter." He then directs
his attention back to Abby, who clearly knows the girl. "She was
in
a school play tonight – just a small part but she's so excited.
She's at her mother's but I gave her the number here so she could
tell me all about it before she goes to bed."
Tom flatly says, "That's nice."
Abby smiles, "Oh, how sweet. How is Jenny? She must
be getting so
big by now?"
Michael proudly says, "Yeah, she's a great kid except for the fact
that she's nine going on twenty-nine! Listen, I've got to
run. Tom,
again it was nice to meet you. (Shakes his hand quickly) And Abby…
(he kisses her on the cheek. A move that takes Tom by surprise)
it
was great to see you. I'll give you a call tomorrow to see when
we
can get together to discuss your proposal."
Abby just says, "Thanks, that would be great. Take care."
And he
leaves.
Abby knows Tom won't be happy about her getting together with
Michael, but he would be such a great resource for her proposal and
she has no feelings for him.
Abby turns to Tom to again gauge his reaction to the situation.
Tom
appears upset and states, "Well, I think I've had enough socializing
for one evening. Are you ready?" Before Abby has a chance
to
respond, he is heading for the door.
The two drive home in near silence. At home, Tom walks into
their
bedroom as Abby trails. Tom begins to take his jacket and tie
off.
Abby sits on the bed and faces him.
Abby realizes Tom is upset, but knows it's silly for him to be
jealous. Abby tries to break the ice. "So, do you want to
talk
about it?"
Tom snidely responds, "Talk about what?"
Abby tries to keep things light, "Oh, about why you haven't said a
word to me since we left the reception. I gather that your upset
with me, but I'm not exactly sure why."
Tom suddenly stops with the task of taking off his shoes, " You're
not sure why? Abby, did you ever plan to tell me about Dr.
Michael
Donovan?"
Abby is sincerely confused, "What do you mean?"
Tom's stands up as his voice grows louder, "What do I mean? Abby,
it's a little awkward to meet some guy for the first time who
casually mentions that he once asked your wife to marry him! And
who
obviously still has feelings for you, he couldn't keep his eyes or
his hands off of you! And then to find out the two of you are
planning on working together! I can't believe in all the time
we've
been together you've never even mentioned him!"
Abby gets a little defensive. "Tom, you're being
ridiculous.
Besides, you've never been exactly interested in hearing about
relationships I had prior to meeting you. I guess I never saw a
need
to mention him. I mean it was a long time ago. We stopped
dating
nearly a year before I even met you!"
Tom is still upset, "Well it sounds like he was more than just
someone you dated. I mean if he asked you to marry him. Not
to
mention the fact that you obviously have a lot in common." (Referring
to their work)
Abby sighs then walks over to Tom who is standing by the
fireplace.
She touches his shirt and looks into his eyes in an attempt to
diffuse his concerns. "Tom, Michael is a great guy. And
you're
right, professionally; we have a lot in common. We dated for a
while
and he did ask me to marry him but I never really considered his
proposal. I wasn't in love with him." Abby kisses Tom on
the
cheek, "I guess I was just holding out for a man that stimulated my
heart as much as my head." Tom starts to soften slightly.
Abby
wraps her arms around his neck. "Come on Tom, we've been through
the
jealousy thing before. I should hope by now you know you can
trust
me." She starts to kiss him and in her most seductive voice
says, "You're the only man I want."
They kiss, then Tom pulls away a little and tries to explain his
reaction. "Abby, I know I over react sometimes. And I do
trust
you. It's just that… well, sometimes I feel like our worlds are
still so far a part." Abby is listening.
Tom isn't quite sure how to say what he is feeling. "There's our
careers pulling us in two different directions. The difference in
our ages, our often-differing philosophies on parenting – it's
difficult sometimes. And then tonight…meeting this guy from your
past…well it just made me realize that even after four years
together, there is obviously a lot about you I don't know or
understand."
Abby is puzzled and annoyed at how Tom could jump to such a
conclusion. She pulls away and returns to the edge of the
bed. "Tom, what do you want me to say? I mean it's not like
we
haven't been through this before. We are different, but that's
what
makes it interesting. It doesn't mean we can't make each other
happy. I mean, I thought we were happy."
Tom pauses for a minute and does a quick turnabout, "You know what,
you're right. There is no sense re-hashing all of this.
Like I
said, I'm just overreacting. Let's just drop it, okay? It's
been a
long day. I'm sorry." With that he goes into the bathroom
to get
ready for bed.
Abby is still perplexed but figures she's better off letting it drop.
A couple days later at the dinner table:
There is normal dinnertime banter among the Bradfords. Elizabeth
is
talking about her classes and workload this semester. She then
turns
to Abby; "As a matter of fact I was hoping maybe you could help me
zero in on a topic for my Poetry class theme paper. I thought I'd
do
it on Emily Dickinson. I know she's one of your favorites, so
maybe
you wouldn't mind helping me put together an outline or at least help
me flush out some ideas?"
Abby is eager to help, "Sure I'd love to help. It sounds
interesting."
Elizabeth pushes for a specific time "Do you have any time
tomorrow?
I'm meeting with Professor Hawkins to review my outline next week so
I've got to get moving on it."
Abby thinks about the day ahead, "Aw, tomorrow's kind of crazy, but
maybe we could meet for lunch - 12:15 or so?"
Elizabeth Is thrilled, "That would be great! Thanks Abby, I
really
appreciate it." Liz changes gears, "Speaking of lunch, I saw you
in
the café today. Who was that guy you were eating
with? A new
professor I hope?"
Tom quickly snaps to attention at the mention of Abby's lunch partner.
Abby grows uncomfortable as she feels Tom's eyes on her. "Oh no, he
teaches down at UCLA – he's just doing some research for a book."
Elizabeth gives a disappointed look, "Too bad. He was pretty
cute.
I wouldn't mind staring at him for a semester!"
Abby shakes her head at the comment.
Jeremy starts to stand "May I be excused? I'm meeting the guys
down
at the Teen Center to play hoop."
Abby is eager to escape Tom's glare, "I'm headed to the library
myself. If you give me a few minutes, I'll drop you off."
Abby gives Tom a quick look then excuses herself and heads upstairs
to change clothes and gather some books. When she comes back
down,
she sees Jeremy waiting in the foyer.
Abby says, "I need to talk to Tom for second, I'll meet you outside."
Jeremy heads out the door, "Okay"
Abby takes a deep breathe then opens Tom's study door. Tom
staring
out the window. He appears to be deep in thought.
Abby walks over to Tom, "I'm going to head out. I shouldn't be
too
late."
Tom is distant as Abby touches his shoulder in an attempt to reel him
in, "I thought we might be due for one of our `date nights' what do
you say?" Tom pauses, then smiles slightly as he realizes she's
trying to reassure him. "Sure, that sounds good." Abby
smiles, "Great, I'll see you around 10:00?" He nods and she gives
him a quick kiss goodbye.
Later that evening at approximately 10:30, Tom is in the kitchen
cleaning up some dishes as Abby enters and greets her husband, "Hi."
Tom flatly responds to her arrival, "You're home".
Abby tells him, "One of my Methods students caught me as I was
leaving the library." She sees Tom is a little annoyed that she
is
late, so she tries to make light of the things. "I thought I'd
never
escape!" Abby approaches Tom by the sink and notices he has just
eaten something. "Um, what were you eating, anything good?"
Tom replies, "Just some leftover pasta from the other night."
Abby, "Umm, any left?" Tom shakes his head, "Sorry."
Abby is feeling playful, "Aw, that's okay, I'll save my appetite for
our `date'." And she throws her arms around his neck and attempts to
kiss him.
Tom pulls away, annoyed that she is late and still stewing about her
lunch with Michael. "It's getting late and I'm pretty tired, I think
I'll take a rain check."
Abby is taken aback by this but still tries to engage him, "Come on
Tom. I know I'm a little late, but I bet I can think of a way to
make up for my tardiness!"
Tom's not biting, "Really Abby it's been a long day. I'm beat."
Abby is annoyed now, "Tom what's going on? Is this about my lunch
today? I mean we were in a crowded cafeteria. It's not like
there
was anything to it, we were just talking about my proposal!"
Tom responds, "Abby I'm just tired."
Just then, Joannie, Mary and Elizabeth enter the kitchen from the
back door. They say hello to Tom and Abby. Abby and Tom
cease their
conversation immediately. Joannie heads for the refrigerator
looking
for something to eat, "I'm starved, anything good in here? Hey,
how
about omelets?"
Elizabeth and Mary immediately concur, "Yeah" "I'm starved"
Joannie looks to Tom and Abby to see if they are in. Tom declines
abruptly, "No thanks. I'm going to bed." Abby gives him a quick
look
and sees that he wishes to abandon their conversation, then responds
to Joannie, "Sure, that sounds good." And she sarcastically
directs
to Tom, "I'm not very tired."
Tom leaves the kitchen and Abby and the girls make their snack.
Several days later:
Abby arrives home. It's late and the house is quiet. She
enters the
dark bedroom and sees that Tom is asleep. She quietly walks
around
the bed towards the bathroom. Suddenly Tom lifts his head and
turns
on the light. " Abby?"
Abby replies, "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you."
Tom is annoyed, "I wasn't asleep. I've been worried – where have
you
been?"
Abby sits on the edge of the bed and excitedly tells Tom about the
progress she has made on her proposal. "Oh, I didn't mean to
worry
you but I was on a roll. I've got my proposal nearly
finished. I
have to get a hold of some research that was recently done at
Berkley, but I'm almost there! I ran into Michael in the library
and
he told me about…"
Tom interrupts, "You were with him?"
Tom's accusing tone takes Abby by surprise, "What do you mean I
was `WITH HIM?' You make it sound like we had a secret
rendezvous.
He was there doing his research – and we got to talking - in fact,
his help has saved me a lot of time."
Tom responds, "Whatever. It just seems like you're back to the
same
old routine."
Abby looks perplexed as Tom continues, "Now that you're teaching at
the University, you're completely consumed – the late hours – I mean
it's after midnight and I don't even know where you are or whom
you're with!"
Now standing, Abby gasps, "Do you hear yourself what's with the
lecture? It's one night and I left you a message. Come on
Tom,
you're treating me like one of the kids – I'm your wife, remember?"
Tom stands, raising his voice, "Oh, I remember. I think
it's you
that forgets sometimes!"
Abby is growing very frustrated, "What? Oh, because if I were
a `proper' wife, I'd be waiting at home for you ready to serve your
dinner, rub your tired feet and present you with the evening
paper!
Well, I'm sorry, but this isn't Father Knows Best and I'm not Donna
Reed!"
Tom responds spitefully, "That's for sure!"
Abby glares at Tom. "Here we go again – the same old
argument.
All's fine and dandy as long as I'm by your side - supporting you
with every issue that comes up in your life, but as soon as I get
excited about my career– I'm suddenly the neglectful wife and mother –
oh, I'm sorry – I mean STEPmother!"
Tom retracts a little, "That's not what I said."
Abby tries to regain her composure, responding in a quieter, pleading
tone. "Well then why for once can you not just be happy for
me. I'm
finally getting the opportunity to do what I've been working for all
these years. And yes, I'm excited, and instead of getting support
from you - once again, you can only see how things affect YOU!"
Tom tries to defend himself. "What are you talking about? I
support
you – you went forward with all those things didn't you?"
Abby retorts, "Only after fighting tooth and nail. Tom, it
shouldn't be this way. I shouldn't have to fight to be
ME! I'm
sorry but I am not Donna Reed" then angrily adds, "or should I say
Joan Bradford!"
Tom quickly concurs, "Well, you're right about that one - Joan put
her family first!"
Abby, looking very hurt and upset says, "I didn't know putting this
family first meant I had to be chained to the front door!" Abby's
voice softens, as she grows more emotional. "You know Tom, since
the
moment we got engaged, I've had to deal with each of the kids'
comparisons to their mother and as hard and as painful as that has
been, I could deal with it -- it went with the territory. I mean
I'm
not their real mother and acceptance into their lives was something I
had to earn." With a tear in her eye, she continues, "But you,
you
are my husband – I shouldn't have to constantly PROVE myself to
you.
When will you accept me…for me! Am I always going to be wife #2 –
the one that doesn't quite measured up?"
Tom calms down a bit as he realizes he may have gone too far. "I
didn't say that – it's just that you two are different and sometimes
I have a hard time dealing..."
Abby is exasperated, "That's right, we are different!"
It suddenly dawns on her what this argument is really about. "I
get
it now, that whole ridiculous argument we had the other night in
which you went on and on about how concerned you were about the
difference between us... It's not the differences between
you and
me you're worried about – it's the differences between Joan and me
that really matter!" Abby pauses a moment, "I am not Joan.
I'm Abby
and either you accept that or this marriage..."
Abby stops abruptly, fearing what she almost said. She wipes a
tear
from her cheek then rushes past Tom.
"I've got to get out of here." She grabs her pocketbook and coat
from the chair and heads towards the bedroom door.
Tom rushes after her. "Wait a minute – Abby! What are you
doing?
Where are you going? It's the middle of the night!"
Tom grabs Abby's arm from behind as she's about to open the door.
Abby quickly hanks her arm back. "Suddenly this doesn't feel like
MY
home!"
She opens the door and rushes down the stairs as Tom follows. "Abby,
will you just calm down a minute? Wait!"
Abby ignores his pleas and slams the front door on her way out.
Tom,
who is left standing there, looks down at his pajamas and bare feet
and realizes he can't run after her.
Tom spends the night pacing the house trying to figure out what to
do. By dawn, he can't wait any longer and decides to search a few
places he thinks Abby could be – the University, the park, David's
apartment, Janet's apartment. But he doesn't find her car
anywhere.
He arrives back home just as the kids are beginning their day. He
enters the kitchen and heads for a cup of coffee. Elizabeth
greets
him, assuming he came from upstairs.
"Hi Dad. Hey, is Abby up yet?"
Tom hesitates since isn't sure what to say. "Ah, yeah... actually
she's not here, she had to get an early start today."
Elizabeth is disappointed, "Oh bummer. I wanted to tell her about
my
meeting with Professor Hawkins yesterday."
Tom inquires, "What meeting?"
"Remember how Abby was going to help me put together an outline for
my Poetry theme paper? Well, she came up with a great
topic. I'm
going to focus on how Emily Dickinson's work reflected societal and
cultural influences at the time. And when I met with Professor
Hawkins, he not only approved it, he loved it! Of course now I
have
to write it but I think…"
Tom is struck with a horrible pang of guilt as he thinks about all
that Abby does do for this family and how awful he treated her the
night before. He stares off, not really paying attention to
Elizabeth.
Elizabeth stops talking when she notices that he's not paying
attention, "Dad? Earth to Dad?"
Tom snaps out of it, "Oh, I'm sorry Elizabeth, I'm a little tired
this morning. I'm glad you're paper is going well. I'm sure
you'll
do a great job with it. I'll see you later, I've got to get
dressed
for work."
Elizabeth looks a little confused, "Sure, Dad. See you later."
After driving around most of the night, Abby decides to go to the
University to collect some books and materials and makes arrangements
to go to Berkley to track down the research information she needs for
her proposal. She needs some time alone. To think and try
to figure
out what happened to her and Tom's relationship. Hoping to avoid
another confrontation with Tom, she waits until mid morning to go
back to the house. She reaches the driveway and is relieved not
to
see Tom's car. She takes a deep breath and enters the front
door.
Once inside, she looks around to see if anyone is home. The coast
appears to be clear so she goes upstairs to her bedroom. Abby
immediately pulls a weekender-type bag from the closet and starts
packing some things.
Meanwhile, Mary, dressed in a robe after taking a shower, is in her
room. She hears noise coming from Tom & Abby's bedroom.
Mary gently
knocks on the door as she pushes the partially shut door open.
Abby, not expecting to see anyone is at first startled then relieved
by who she sees. "Oh, Mary, it's you."
Mary replies, "I'm sorry if I startled you".
"It's okay." There is an awkward silence as Mary looks at the bag.
Mary breaks the silence, "Abby, I kind of overheard you and Dad last
night and well, I don't know what you were arguing about but do you
want to talk about it?"
Continuing to pack, Abby says "Listen Mary, I know you're trying to
help and I appreciate it, but you're Dad and I have some things to
work out. And well, the less we involve you or anyone else in the
family, the easier it will be."
Mary challenges her, "By the looks of things (motioning to the packed
bag) it doesn't look like you plan to work anything out."
Abby continues what she's doing, "Yeah well, I just need a few days
to clear my head. Don't read too much into this okay?"
"Where are you going?" Mary asks.
Abby answers, "San Francisco. I need to do some research
for my
proposal." She adds sarcastically, "And now seems like the
perfect
time."
Mary pushes for more details, "Have you talked to Dad? Does he
know
you're going?"
Abby puts her hand to her forehead and sighs, "No. Mary, I just
can't face him right now. Lately every time we talk, it turns
into
an argument – and I'm just not up to it."
Seeing how upset Abby is, Mary backs off a little, "I didn't talk to
him this morning, but given the pacing I heard last night, I don't
think he slept very much either. Abby, he's going to be a wreck,
what do I tell him?" Abby gathers her things and heads toward
Mary
and the bedroom door, "Mary, I'm not asking you to lie, just tell him
and the rest of the family that I've gone to San Francisco for a few
days to do some research and I'll call."
Mary quickly retorts, "Will you?"
Mary goes on to add, "Oh Abby, I know Dad tends to over react and
speaks before he thinks sometimes, but I know how much he loves you
and I'm sure whatever happened, you two can work it out".
Abby stops and turns to Mary with an `I'm not so sure I agree'
look. Abby gives Mary a quick hug and says softly, "I need
some
time Mary. Just tell him I'm okay, alright?" Mary nods in
agreement
and Abby heads down the stairs with her bag.
A couple hours later, Tom is at the Register. He is obviously
preoccupied. He calls Abby's office at the University and is told
she is not in. When asked if he wants to leave a message, he
says, "Just tell her that her husband called." After hanging up
the
phone, he decides to head home, hoping she's at the house. As he
enters the driveway, he looks disappointed when he doesn't see her
car. Looking distraught he enters the house. Mary is coming
down
the stairs as he enters.
Mary greets her father, "Looking for Abby by chance?"
Tom quickly looks up, "Is she here?"
Cautiously, Mary replies, "No – she was, but…ah she went to San
Francisco."
Clearly disappointed, Tom questions Mary, "San Francisco?"
"Yeah, she said she had to do some research for her proposal."
Tom looks crushed as he walks into the study.
Mary follows behind him, "Ah, Dad I got in late last night from the
hospital and well… I kind of overheard you and Abby arguing. I
don't
know what it was about but she seems pretty upset."
Tom quickly inquires, "What did she say?"
Trying to calm her father, she says, "Not much. She didn't want
to
talk about it. I think she just needs a little time to think
things
through."
"Oh Mary, what have I done?" as he slumps into his chair. "I
didn't
mean to hurt her. I can be such an idiot sometimes."
Mary curiously asks, "Well, what did you do? I mean what
happened
to make her so upset?"
Tom winces, "Oh, I basically accused her of choosing her career over
me and the family and before I knew it I also managed to make her
feel she didn't measure up to your mother."
"Dad, you didn't?" Tom just sighs and looks away in
disgust.
Mary continues, "Dad, when are you going to stop persecuting her for
not being Mom? Believe me, I loved Mom. She was a great
mother –
and wife. But so is Abby. They are just different
people." Tom
shakes his head slightly at the irony in Mary's statement.
Mary doesn't notice and continues. "I mean she is there when we
need
her – as a friend and a `mother' – especially to Nicholas and the
younger kids. You know sometimes I think you choose to
remember Mom
as even more perfect than she was. I have a feeling that if she
were
around now, she'd be working outside the house too or would certainly
be longing to. Sure Mom loved her family and being home with her
kids was important to her, but we were all a lot younger then.
She
always used to talk about going back to photography someday. I'm
sure you and Mom would be battling over the same kinds of issues as
you and Abby are now. And lets face it, we all know Abby loves us
and if anyone has made sacrifices for this family, it's her." Tom
nods his head in agreement.
"But Dad, she didn't give birth to eight children. You can't
expect
her to have the same sense of responsibility that Mom would have.
It's just not fair." Knowing Tom's history of not
supporting Abby's
career, Mary adds, "Of course, it probably wasn't her
responsibilities as a mother that inspired the argument! I image
it
was more likely because you didn't think she's spending enough time
with you."
Feeling beat up and miserable because he knows she's right, he
responds, "Something like that." Tom gets up from his chair and
walks over and looks out the window and softly proclaims, "Mary, I
love her so much. I really do."
Tom pauses for a second then turns around to face Mary. "But
you're
right – I don't always appreciate all that she does for me or you
kids. And I guess sometimes I do look back at your mother through
rose-colored glasses – forgetting how lucky I am now to have Abby in
my life. Last night I overreacted about some thing stupid and
yeah
guess I was feeling a little left out. So, in an attempt to boost
my
ego, I made her feel like she didn't measure up somehow. Nice
eh?"
Mary doesn't know what to say.
Tom says desperately, "I've got to talk her Mary. I don't want to
lose her."
Mary pauses a second to think, "Well, maybe we could call the
University, somebody there must have a clue where she went to do the
research."
[A few minutes later in Tom and Abby's bedroom]
Mary is finishing up a phone conversation with someone from the
University, while Tom is throwing a few things into a travel bag.
Mary hangs up and turns to her Dad, "Well, nobody seems to know where
she is staying, but Amy, her TA, said she was planning on going to
Berkley to review some research study that was done last year on -----
."
Tom interrupts, "Berkley? That's right, she mentioned something
about that last night. Of course that was before I squashed all
her
enthusiasm with my tirade. Well it's worth a shot, I can't just
sit
around here and wait." He zips up his bag and gives Mary a quick
kiss, "Wish me luck and do me a favor, make sure someone is around to
watch Nicholas, okay?"
Mary says, "Sure, he'll be fine." Then emphasizes, "But Dad, just
remember, Abby's not exactly expecting you – take it slow, okay?"
Late in the day, we see Tom roaming the Berkley campus, asking for
directions and trying to find the library. Abby is in the library
with several books out on the table. She's dazing off, thinking
about Tom, then shakes her head a bit and gets back to work.
Soon Tom enters the library, seeking his wife. Finally he spots
her. She looks involved in her work and he pauses to watch her
for a
few moments. He slowly walks to the table, unsure of what to say
or
how she'll react, "Abby."
Abby stops what she was doing and looks up to see Tom. She's
clearly
not thrilled to see him. "Tom what are you doing here?"
Tom tries to lighten things up, "Well you mean besides the self
guided tour of Berkley?" Abby is not amused. Tom sighs and says
seriously, "I was hoping to apologize." Abby is staring down at
the
table, avoiding eye contact. Tom takes a seat next to her, "Abby,
I
am so sorry." Tom tries to take her hand, but she pulls it away.
Tom softly tries again, "I was wrong and I said some things that hurt
you very much, but..."
Abby interrupts him, "but what? You're sorry and it won't happen
again – it was just the heat of the moment? Tom, I've heard that
before and yet we continue to have the same argument. And I'm
still
left feeling inadequate and second-rate!"
Tom tries again, "Abby, I never…" But, Abby isn't listening.
"This
isn't the place", and she packs up her things and heads out of the
library.
Tom and Abby emerge from the library. The sun is beginning to set
and Abby quickly begins to walk across the campus as Tom struggles
just to keep up.
Tom pleads, "Abby will you please just slow down for a second and
talk to me?" Abby keeps moving.
Tom gently, but firmly takes her arm to stop her and turns to face
her.
"Please?" Abby relents but won't look at him. "Abby, I know
you are
angry and hurt – and you have every right to be. I've been such
an
idiot lately. I guess Fitzi mistaking you for my daughter, the
arrival of Michael and your renewed commitment to your career just
made me feel… well, left out I guess...and scared… scared of the gap
between us getting any bigger. So, what do I do? I take out
my
fears and frustrations on you and make you feel – well, like your
doing something wrong. When, as you said last night, all you were
doing was being you…and there is nothing wrong with that." Tom starts
to get choked up and Abby finally looks at him. But while she
appears to be softening, she's not ready to give in yet.
Tom continues, "I know I don't say it enough and I certainly haven't
shown you lately, but YOU are the most intelligent, thoughtful,
generous…amazing woman..."
Tom takes her hand into his and this time she lets him. She
briefly
looks into his eyes to judge his sincerity. "…And I am so sorry
that
I ever made you feel you were anything but exactly that. I had no
right to say the things I said to you or to lash out at you because
of my own insecurities. Abby, I know you may not believe me, but
I
swear that I didn't mean what I said – especially the stuff about
Joan. As much as I loved Joan, I don't wish for you to be more
like
her. I fell in love with you because of the unique and incredible
person YOU are. And it's that person that I'm still crazy
about. So
crazy, that I sometimes say and do things that I regret very
much."
Abby wants to believe him, but she's still hurt. "Then why Tom?
Why
did you say it?"
Tom shakes his head a bit and shrugs his shoulders, "I don't
know. I
guess because I knew it would hurt you."
She nods in agreement and says exasperatedly, "Yeah, well you guessed
right."
Tom makes a final attempt to sway her. "Abby, I love you so much
and
even though, I probably don't deserve it, please give me another
chance. I don't want to lose you."
Abby pauses and with a tear in her eye, gently touches his face, "Oh,
Tom", and they embrace, each looking relieved. After a few
moments
they pull back and Tom wipes a tear from Abby's cheek then kisses
her.
After a few moments, Abby quietly says, "So, where do we go from
here?"
Tom replies, "Well, if you mean metaphorically, I say we go on to
spend the rest of our lives together because I can't imagine my life
without you." Then jokingly adds, "But, if you mean, where do we
go
at this very second? I'd like to suggest the nearest
hotel!"
Abby smiles and adds playfully, "For a good nights sleep of
course?"
Tom leers at her and insinuates that he had something more in
mind, "Yeah, that too."
They both laugh and walk away arm-in-arm.
