Nebraska is often joked about as being a vast flat expanse, but it really is rolling hills. Fall and winter bring on the fading primary colors of summer and launch the secondary hues of browns, beige, off-purples and soft golds in Eastern Nebraska. Without their summer coat of leaves the trees show their majestic skeletal forms. The only evergreen tree native to the area is the red cedar or Juniperus virginiana. This tree provides shelter and berries for many birds and animals in winter and good nesting sites in summer. The many grasses and wild flowers of the prairies hold their seed heads all winter, making fresh food available to the wildlife. |
