Using
a check cord and a pigeon to teach a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy to whoa upon scenting a bird.
This lesson brings out the instinct to point in the puppy.
Lessons
with a puppy must be short and happy experiences. At this stage, we are
only trying to get the puppy interested in birds. And all lessons must end
with a fun experience, like this Vizsla puppy's wild run through the country.
Another
approach for building a puppy's enthusiasm for birds and for the water is to let
them chase a duck with its wings clipped. The dogs never catch the duck,
but the chase builds their enthusiasm.
Not
all work is done in the field. NAVHDA encourages the use of a training
table to work on simple obedience skills, particularly on the "whoa"
command.
Doing
some water work at the Imperial Wildlife Area. Dave Awbrey and Diane
Blackwood are preparing their Vizslas for a water retrieve.
This
photo shows two German Shorthaired Pointers doing field work. The younger dog establishes point
and the older dog honors the point of the first dog. This is called
"backing".
Our
chapter provides dogs for young and novice hunters at DFG-sponsored Family and
Junior Pheasant Hunts. Here member Lolly Gores and her Brittany Taylor
pose with a proud young hunter and his pheasant.
Several
German Shorthaired Pointers, Vizslas and one Weimaraner are waiting their turn
at one of our training clinics.
