History:

NC 45 was born in the late 1940 Virginia renumbering, running from US 17 near Merry Hill north to NC 97 (current NC 461) Winton. This had been NC 35.
In 1969, NC 45 was extended south over what had been Bertie SRs 1500/1508 and Washington SR 1339 to end at US 64/NC 32 near Plymouth. The 1968 NCDOT County Atlas shows the bridge over the Roanoke River as complete and using secondary designations.

In 1974, NC 45 was extended north through Winton along Main St (was US 13) then west on Mulberry St (was US 158) to connect with the new routing of US 13-158 bypassing Winton.

In 1980 or 1981, NC 45 was extended south over SR 1111 around Plymouth, then duplexed with NC 32 and NC 99 down to Pike Road area, then replaced Beaufort SR 1754 and Hyde SR 1300 to end at US 264 Ponzer.
In 1983 or 1984, NC 45 was extended south with US 264, then replaced SR 1132 (once part of US 264) to Swanquarter and the ferry terminal.

The first NC 45 was born in 1930 as new primary routing. Ran from NC 12 (now US 258) Woodland north through Conway to meet up with the older VA 35.
In 1933, NC 45 was extended south as new routing to NC 305.
In late 1940 NC 45 was renumbered as NC 35 to match VA 35.
Original NC 45 was a numbering violation because it did not touch NC 40. Not sure why it wasn't a NC 48x or 12x route.

Comments:

NC 45 is routed in Plymouth such that it forms an unsigned NC 32 Bypass. The bridge over the 3 rivers is a mile long.
