| 130
|
103 miles; from Business US 74 in Maxton to Holden Beach on the coast. |
| The original Route 130 ran over today's Route 211 in Brunswick
County, between US 17 and Southport.
(US 17 then was called NC 30.) It was signed by 1928.
The state's original numbering system would have dictated that 13x routes be spurs off the original NC 13. But every original NC 13 -- there were four of them -- was too short to have any spurs. All the 13x routes came later and are randomly located. In 1929, 130 was extended west along US 17 (NC 30 then) and a previously unnumbered road to today's US 701 (NC 23 then) near Whiteville. In 1939, 130 was extended further west over what had been called NC 71 to its current terminus in Maxton. Around 1950, 130 was extended north from Southport to US 17/74/76 near Wilmington. This road existed before 1950, but was previously unnumbered. Today it's part of Route 133. Between 1956 and 1958, the 130 designation was removed on everything east of US 17. The old 130 from 17 east to Southport became an extension of 211, and from Southport to the Wilmington area became NC 40 briefly before becoming NC 133. Around 1959, 130 was extended east from US 17 to Holden Beach over a previously unnumbered road. |

| 131
|
25 miles; from US 701 in Columbus County to NC 87 in Bladen County. |
| Born in 1950. 131 was signed over a road
that had mostly gone unnumbered, save for a stretch of NC 410 with which
131 was (and still is) co-signed.
Unchanged since then. |

| 132
|
15 miles; from US 421 to US 117, entirely in New Hanover County. Goes through Wilmington; it's signed over College Road. |
| Probably born in 1957 (definitely by 1958); unnumbered before then. The interchange with I-40 was built in the mid-1980s, but otherwise 132's alignment has not changed. | |
| Four lanes south of I-40. The stretch of 132 though downtown Wilmington carried four lanes before the number was assigned. | |
| On eastbound I-40, the Interstate designation ends at exit 420 and 132 takes over before the road hits a traffic light at US 74 (photo). Heading the other way, northbound 132 has an "exit to self"; if you don't exit, the road becomes I-40. | |

| 133
|
About 50 miles; from Yaupon Beach in Brunswick County to
NC 211 in Pender County.
Route 133 gets co-signed with a lot of other roads, especially through Southport and Wilmington. |
| Born around 1961 (definitely by 1962). NC 132 beat it by a few years. Was previously NC 40. Before 1956, the stretch of 133 south of US 17/74/76 was part of NC 130. Guy at State Highway Comission, circa 1960: "Well, we can't call it 40 anymore because of that Interstate. Wonder what we haven't used yet". | |
