| 139 | ||
| 139 is probably the lowest number that has never been used
for any kind of state highway in North Carolina. Most of the other 13x
highways don't date from the early years, but were instead assigned in
numerical order between the late 1950s and the mid-1970s. But the state
apparently skipped 139, preferring instead to use available numbers in
the 140s and 150s (not to mention 215, 225 and 752).
Although 139 is a rather ugly number, I'd like to see it get used someday.
