As of October 2002, N.C. 136 starts at N.C. 115 in Mooresville, Iredell County, and ends at N.C. 73 in Concord, Cabarrus County.

History
N.C. 136 was first signed in the early 1970s (definitely by 1974). Originally it only ran through Concord and Kannapolis, from N.C. 73 north to U.S. 29/601.

In the mid-1980s, 136 was extended westward to its current terminus in Mooresville.

On October 24, 2002, Governor Mike Easley signed into law a bill swapping N.C. 136 with N.C. 3. This was done to honor Dale Earnhardt; see the N.C. 3 entry for more, including maps.

139
139 is probably the lowest number that has never been used for any kind of state highway in North Carolina. Most of the other 13x highways don't date from the early years, but were instead assigned in numerical order between the late 1950s and the mid-1970s. But the state apparently skipped 139, preferring instead to use available numbers in the 140s and 150s (not to mention 215, 225 and 752).

Although 139 is a rather ugly number, I'd like to see it get used someday.
