| The Road: | Begins at NC 101 east of Havelock in Craven County and ends at NC 92-NC 99 in Beaufort County | Towns and Attractions: | Minnesottt Beach, Arapahoe, Grantsboro, Aurora, Free Ferries over each the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers: | History: |
NC 306 was born in 1931 or 1932 as new primary routing. It began at NC 33 west of Aurora, and proceeded to Grantsboro and Arapahoe before ending at Minnesott Beach. NC 306 obeyed the original system by intersecting NC 302 (now NC 55) in Grantsboro.
It wasn't until the 1970's that NC 306 was extended both directions over the ferries to its respective endpoints. |
Comment: | The Neuse River crossing is being considered for a bridge to replace the ferry. |

| The Road: | Begins at NC 304 at Cash Corner in Pamlico County and ends at Vandemere, also in Pamlico County | Towns and Attractions: | Cash Corner, Vandemere: | History: | NC 307 was born in 1931 or 1932. It ran then just like it does now. NC 307 had been the last mile of NC 304 prior to its extension out to Hobucken. | Comment: | Driving NC 307, it's over before it begins. NC 307 is the shortest NC primary route this side of NC 400. |

| The Road: | Begins at US 258 and NC 561 south of Rich Square in Northampton County and ends at US 64 and NC 32 in Pleasant Grove in Washington County | Towns and Attractions: | Roxobel, Kellford, Drew, Windsor, Mackeys, Pleasant Grove | History: |
NC 308 was born in 1933 or 1934 as new primary routing. It ran from US 258 to its parent, NC 30 (US 13 Business today), at Windsor.
In the early 1980's (definitely by 1982), NC 308 was extended as new routing east over the Cashie, Middle, and Roanoke Rivers to where it ends at US 64. None of this (including the NC 45 piece) had been primary routing, except for the part between NC 45 and US 64, which is shown on the 1922 Auto Trails Map as part of the original NC 90. |
Comment: | East of Windsor, NC 308 passes very near one of the lesser-known ferries in NC, over the Cashie River at Sans Souci. This free ferry connects pieces of SR 1500 two (at least in the late 80's) dirt roads. A brief piece about this ferry can be found here. |

NC 311 was born in the early 30's, by 1932. It began at its short-lived parent, the original NC 31, east of Mars Hill and proceeded north to Faust, Little Creek, and ended at the community of English near the Tennessee border in northeastern Madison County.
NC 31 is now SR 1609 Main St. NC 311 went north along today's US 23 to the settlement of California, then veered off onto SR 1347 Chandler Creek Rd, back across US 23 near Faust, then west along SR 1503, Old US 23, to SR 1502 Puncheon Fork Rd, where NC 311 headed north to English. It appears that by 1934, NC 311 reached into Tennessee. Since US 311 was in North Carolina already, NC 311 was eliminated in 1935, renumbered as NC 36 and later as part of US 23. | ||

NC 321 was in place by 1922, running from its parent NC 32 Beckford Jct (now Hoffers Fork) and ran south to Belvidere and ending at NC 342 (now Main St. Extension - old US 17) Winfall.
Between 1925-27, NC 321 was rerouted north from Belvidere to meet NC 32 at Gilden. Today the old route to Beckford is uncertain, as there are several SR possibilities that accomplish this. In 1928, NC 321 was extended northwest over new routing to end at NC 30 (today's US 158 Business) Gatesville. In 1931 or 1932, NC 321 was extended north again to Gates and the Virginia State Line (at US 13's crossing). The Virginia side was not a primary route, though VA 506 (VA 53 after July 1933) ran to just below Whaleyville. VA 53 may have been extended to meet NC 321 in 1934-35, but this is not certain. Since US 321 existed in North Carolina, NC 321 had to be renumbered in 1935. It became NC 37, which it remains today, except for the last half-mile of US 13 in North Carolina. |
