N.C. 461  20 miles
The Road: Begins at NC 561 near St. John in Hertford County and ends at near the settlement of Pilands Crossroads, also in Hertford County.
Towns and Attractions: St. John's, Winton
History: NC 461 was born between 1964-68 as new construction. It began at NC 561 and ended at US 13 south of Winton. In 2000, NC 461 was extended into Winton along US 13 and SR 1457 (old US 13), then east with NC 45, then to Pilands Crossroads over what was SR 1455 and SR 1400.
Comment: NC 461 originally served as a cutoff between NC 561 and US 13. Has anyone been out to the new east end? Is there a reason to sign a primary highway there?

N.C. 481  20 miles
The Road: Begins at NC 4/NC 48 Glenview and ends at NC 561 Tillery, all within Halifax County.
Towns and Attractions: Enfield
History: NC 481 was born in the late 1930's. It ran just as it does now, except NC 4-48 was just NC 48 then.

There have been two other NC 481's. In 1925, a NC 481 was created as a spur off of original NC 48. It ran from NC 48 (ancestor to US 158) Roanoke Rapids northeast to NC 40 (now part of US 301) Pleasant Hill. Around 1928, NC 481 was renumbered as part of NC 40. Today it is part of NC 48.

The second NC 481 existed only about 1928-30, but is on VDOT official maps (1929), Standard Maps, and Rand McNally Jr. Atlas (both 1928). It ran from NC 48/US 117 (US 158-301 split) Garysburg north to NC 40 (now US 301-NC 48 jct) Pleasant Hill. This transient NC 481 became mainline NC 40 about 1931. 481 is the highest number used three times in North Carolina.

Comment: Today's 481 does have an interchange with I-95 (Exit 154) and a short multiplex with US 301.
N.C. 481 Business  1 mile
The route: NC 481 Business for Enfield first appeared on the 2003 Official Map. It was of course mainline NC 481 before that. My first awareness of this came when I drove US 301 on a trip May 2, 2004. NC 481 Business does a zig-zag in Downtown Enfield, which was hard for trucks. NC 481 "bypass" still runs through Enfield, using US 301's Enfield route.

N.C. 482  dead
Formerly: NC 482 was born about 1932, running from its parent NC 48 (with US 158) Littleton south to NC 561 near Medoc Mtn State Park. It appears that NC 482 was short lived, as in 1934 this became NC 48 from Littleton to Airlie, and NC 4 from Airlie to NC 561. Today all of this route is part of NC 4.

N.C. 485  long dead
Formerly: NC 485 Existed at least 1922-25 as a branch off the original NC 48. NC 485 was just a short spur from NC 48 (US 158 today) Murfreesboro north to the Virginia Line, where it continued as the original VA 121
Between 1926-27, NC 485 was eliminated when the original NC 12 was extended north over it. Later it became part of original US 117, then US 158, and finally today, US 258
