History: US 258 appeared in North Carolina the same year it appeared nationally - 1932. It originally began at US 158 just west of Murfreesboro and ended at US 17 near Jacksonville.
More specifically, US 258 proceeded southwest thorugh Woodland, Rich Square, Scotland Neck, Lawrence along what is still US 258 today, until it reached Princeville. At Princeville, US 258 headed west with US 64/NC 90 (current NC 33) into Tarboro. US 258 was paired up with NC 12 for all of this routing.
US 258/NC 12 left Main St in Tarboro and headed south along Saint James St (unnumbered today within Tarboro) to Crisp. In southern Edgecombe County, US 258 veered west and followed today's Otter Creek Church Rd to Fountain. From there, US 258/NC 12 picked back up today's 258 to Farmville, Lizzie, and Snow Hill.
US 258 then followed today's NC 58 from Snow Hill to Kinston. US 258 used Queen St. all the way through Kinston. Here, NC 12 left US 258's routing heading east toward Trenton. Instead, US 258 picked up NC 121, proceeding south along today's 258 through the emptiness of Lenoir andn Jones Counties until it reached NC 24 near Richlands.
NC 121 ended and NC 24 picked up US 258 through Richlands and southeast to US 17, where US 258 still ends today.

In late 1934 all the NC-route multiplexes were removed from US 258: NC 12 from Murfreesboro to Kinston; NC 121 from Kinston to Richlands. NC 24, however, remained attached to the lower end of US 258.

In 1940, US 258 was extended north through Murfreesboro to the Virginia State Line, replacing what had been part of US 158's routing. Murfreesboro to Virginia has been numbered as 3 different US routes - 117, 158, and now 258 (not to mention NC 12 and NC 485!)

Between 1953-55, US 258 was taken off Otter Creek Church Rd (remains secondary today) and given its shorter alignment between Fountain and Crisp.

By 1958, US 258/NC 24 was bypassed around the west side of Richlands, leaving behind secondary routing.

In 1962 or 1963 US 258's routing was changed between Kinston and Snow Hill. US 258 was placed on the Kinston Bypass with US 70, then headed up to Snow Hill multiplexed with then-NC 58 (this multiplex lasted through at least 1968). This is the route US 258 still uses today. The old route became part of NC 91, later renumbered to NC 58. Queen St below Vernon Ave became part of US 258 Business.

Between 1964-68, US 258 was routed to avoid Tarboro, by using the new US 64 Bypass over the Tar River and new construction to connect back up where US 258 split originally to go to Princeville. The old route through Downtown Tarboro became unnumbered St. James St. and Main St (US 64 Business then, NC 33 today).

Sometime between 1994-2000, US 258 is shown to use the US 158 Murfreesboro Bypass and then NC 11 north to meet back up with traditional US 258. The old way through is definitely US 158 Business, but I have no evidence it is also US 258 Business.

US 258 is a quiet ride through eastern North Carolina. Only about 25 miles of US 258 is 4-lane and all of those miles are multiplexes with other routes.
Mapmikey wonders if US 258's southern ending will be altered when the NC 24 Bypass is completed at Jacksonville.

U.S. 258 Business  4 miles
The route: US 258 Business for Kinston was created in 1962 or 1963. The N-S portion (Queen St) was a renumbering of mainline US 258. However, the E-W portion (Vernon Ave) has never been part of US 258. The entire route was a duplex with US 70 Business. US 258-70 Business E-W portion was the original NC 10, while the N-S portion was the original NC 12.
