U.S. 176   20 miles
Enters Polk County from South Carolina. Ends at U.S. 25 in Hendersonville, Henderson County. Nationally, U.S. 176 starts in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

In Polk County, 176 runs through Tryon along Trade Street. The highway follows the North Pacolet River and provides access to Pearson's Falls. The road ascends Cedar Mountain before running through Saluda.

In Henderson County, 176 crosses the Green River over a bridge built in 1928 (photo above). It also crosses the ECD before going though East Flat Rock and Hendersonville. 176 ascends more than 1000 feet between Tryon and Flat Rock, as the map at right shows.

176 is a four-lane divided highway in the Flat Rock/Hendersonville area, and carries occasional hillclimb lanes northbound up Cedar Mountain.

176 should be extended over U.S. 25 through downtown Hendersonville and over N.C. 191 all the way north to Asheville. Then 191 can be killed. The Hendersonville-to-Asheville corridor doesn't need another U.S. highway. But this plan does make the route numbering in the area more efficient while making 176 more dignified.

176 certainly has its twisty stretches, in the run along the North Pacolet, the climb up to Saluda and (less so) the final surge toward the E.C.D. But the road isn't that long, so it doesn't have the reputation for wickedness that other highways in the state have.
