Shared Lane Marking

Name:

Shared lane marking - also known as the "shared lane arrow", "shared use arrow", "sharrow", "shared lane symbol", "shared roadway marking", "bike in a house"

Status:

The National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD) has recommended to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) that this marking be incorporated into the next edition of the MUTCD, and FHWA included text and figures defining shared lane markings in the draft MUTCD that was distributed for public comment in January 2008.

However, until official action is taken by FHWA to finalize approval and adoption of shared lane markings in the next edition of the MUTCD, the use of these markings is still considered EXPERIMENTAL - and the markings are not approved for use except under written experimental authorization by FHWA in accordance with Section 1A.10 of the MUTCD. Contact Bruce Friedman at FHWA for more details.
