Prince Edward Island - Counties - There appear to be no existing Traffic Circles or Roundabouts. I've been told that although Roundabouts have been discussed, implementation was deferred because "User acceptance of roundabouts is not high in this area, primarily due to lack of experience etc" {ie, PEI drivers have little first hand experience with them}

            Hon. Gail A. Shea, Minister TPW
    Driver Training Manual - Free in PDF format (11.5 mb - perhaps the most thorough Driver Manual in the Northeast!!), now contains references to Roundabouts. The 2007 revision has on pages 109-110 information on driving circular intersections (this is becoming important because all nearby states & provinces are planning & starting to build Roundabouts).

    Charlottetown - the proposed RDB at "Peter Pan Corner" was passed over for political reasons in May'06. There were no pressing congestion or safety problems, & statistics show signals are more dangerous than Roundabouts as the Coles Associates Engineer published in his report to the City Council. The $2 million project will align the legs of the intersection better for when they are ready to install the Roundabout. Also, I expect the projected 2% annual increase in traffic will not materialize.

    CLF - Conservation Law Foundation - interested in Communities Project - Livable Cities, Smart Growth, Public Transportation (as the 1st of 5 listed interests)
    clf.org/transportation is a resource for people working to create more livable communities by improving transportation. Transportation affects not just how we get places, but what those places are like. In New England, CLF has advocated such transportation initiatives as:
  • making neighborhoods safer, quieter and more child-friendly through traffic calming;
  • bringing new life to old commercial areas with public transit improvements; and
  • improving local mobility by retrofitting streets for bicycling and walking.
    CLF works to improve transportation for people living and working in city neighborhoods, suburbs, and rural areas alike. While CLF is primarily concerned with opportunities and problems in New England, its publications and  listserv maintain an international audience. People who use our listserv and who read our publications include private individuals, elected officials, agency and nonprofit organization staff members, community group leaders and consultants.

This is a collection of Internet references related to Roundabout issues & design criteria - I had wanted to include prices, but many are constructed as part of a bigger project, & so figures are usually impossible or misleading. The one reliable estimate seems to be that the cost of a Roundabout is about the same as the cost of signalizing the same intersection. There is also some anecdotal evidence that at this early stage in North American Roundabout construction & design, overpricing & over design may be occurring. Where ever you see the word "Traffic", they seem to be the people who design "Intersections"
(reset 25 May'03)

Prepared by RNWhite, NEAR(at)cox.net  in Fall 2002, revised Feb'08. I'm predicting now (7/03) there will be too many Roundabouts by 2010 in the Northeast to list them individually! I already feel (happily!) overwhelmed by the extent of the work being done in many areas!!
