just west of the downtown Ottawa core, consultants have been hired to do
a parking study and traffic management study for the Somerset Heights area.
The basic tools of traffic calming include street narrowings, street closures, diversions, mazes, stop signs and various other prohibitions. The consultants in the Centretown West study area have some newer tools that are designed to be more subtle, yet effective at traffic calming. . The most intriguing idea is to turn ordinary intersections into mini-traffic circles, by constructing a 6+ foot diameter concrete curb ring in the centre of the intersection. The centre of the ring can be grassed or paved. Motorists approaching the intersection must slow down in order to drive around the concrete curb ring. Motorists turning left must drive 270 degrees around the circle, since the concrete ring is so sized to prevent sneaking diagonally to the left around the ring. Amazingly enough, any stop signs at the intersection are removed, since motorists automatically slow down. Motorists seem to intuitively understand the manoevres required (i.e. unlike some other traffic calming attempts, motorists do not get confused and frustrated).
Measurements taken at intersections with stop signs show high levels of disregard for the signs, and motorists tend to speed up after the sign in an attempt to regain time lost at the stop. But for the circle, motorists don't actually come to a stop, and therefore, they don't speed up in the following mid-block.

The project’s purpose is to provide a direct route into the downtown business district. To accomplish this, the Rotary will be returned to a two-way traffic system with turning movements at the intersection of East Main & South Main Streets controlled by a modern style roundabout. East Street will be realigned to meet the roundabout controlled intersection. At the Ellisburg traffic circle in New Jersey, traffic would lock up at hourly volumes ranging from 4,400 to 5,600 vehicles, and traffic often remained at a standstill until the police intervened. This circle has an elliptical shape with outside diameters of 130 m and 99 m (436 ft and 325 ft). Region 10 - Hauppauge (Long Island) Jones Beach - there are 2 "classic" 2 lane Traffic Circles (~600ft), each with a tall pointed brick obelisk in the center. There are no divider lines, & no Yield lines for traffic entering the circle. (While I was there 5/19/03, a state maintenance PU truck entered & cut across both lanes to the center island missing me by inches.)
Note: The western Traffic Circle is at the southern end of the Wantegh Pkwy, & the eastern one is at Robert Moses State Park Noyack Rd, Wickatuck Rd, & Rt-60 - a small traffic circle that could easily be painted & signed to modern FHWA standards. North Haven (2001) - "The
roundabout was part of the 7 mile long, North Haven, NY Route 114 Traffic Calming project which also included the installation of a continuous multi-use bicycle path, Shelter Island ferry terminal improvements, new roadway signs and pavement markings, and aesthetic enhancements". Shelter Island - Rt-114, at Foxen Creek & S Cartwright Rd; & another farther North by a church (Rt-114, Batman & School Streets) - already for correct signs & lines. Reported 11/23/99: NY DOT spokesperson Eileen Peters said that in the majority of cases, 40 to 60 percent of a population is initially unhappy with the prospect of a roundabout in their community. But after the roundabout is actually installed, she said, that number drops to about 10 percent, with more than 90 percent of residents pleased with the calming method.

This is a collection of Internet references related to Roundabout issues & design criteria - I had wanted to include prices, but many are constructed as part of a bigger project, & so figures are usually impossible or misleading. The one reliable estimate seems to be that the cost of a Roundabout is about the same as the cost of signalizing the same intersection. There is also some anecdotal evidence that at this early stage in North American Roundabout construction & design, overpricing & over design may be occurring. Where ever you see the word "Traffic", they seem to be the people who design "Intersections"

in Fall 2002, revised Mar'08. I'm predicting now (7/03) there will be too many Roundabouts by 2010 in the Northeast to list them individually! I already feel (happily!) overwhelmed by the extent of the work being done in many areas!!
