Who Is Neddy?

Here I am in 1943 at Halethorpe, Maryland

I'm Edna Barney!

Mid parted clouds, all silver-edged, A gleam of fiery gold,
A dash of crimson-varied hues, The Sunset Story's told.
A mirrored lake 'tween mossy banks, A lofty mountain ridge,
A cottage nestling in the vale Seen from a ruined bridge.
A woman longing to discern Beyond the gleam of gold
A rush of memory, a sigh, And Life's strange tale is told.
~~ from Olivia Ward Bush's Fancies

I am a native Marylander and passed my childhood days in the areas of Baltimore and Annapolis. My home now is across the wide Potomac in wonderful Northern Virginia. As a newlywed I began to accompany my Naval Officer husband to his many postings, rearing a family along the way. I have been married to Cliff for more than forty years. Now, in my senior years, I appreciate growing roots here in The Old Dominion, where my maternal forebears first arrived in 1608. As is typical of Virginians, I take delight in my many ancestors, but even more delightful is that I have been most bounteously blessed to become an ancestress, myself, of eight Barney descendants. The name, Neddy comes from my childhood. I remember that when my younger brother began talking, I insisted that he refer to me as Nennie or Neddy. When I was in third grade and he had begun school, he would see me on the playground and greet me with "hey Nennie". I would be terribly embarrassed, as only an eight year old can be as my classmates knew me only as Edna. So that was the end of that and thenceforth I insisted that my family use only my proper given name, Edna.

Although by birth I am a twentieth and twenty-first centurion, my heart and mind dwell somewhere in the hidden crannies of a forgotten, genteel past. I am greatly honored that you have given of your precious time to visit here and I wish it to be a pleasant divertimento for you.

~ Blind Mary ~
(Máire Dhall)

This lovely old tune is "Blind Mary", composed by harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). Máire Dhall tutored the two younger O'Carolan children in harp playing, according to a diary kept by their older brother Charles, October 1726. Although this tune is not typical of Carolan's style, it has been attributed to him in William Forde's "Encyclopedia of Melody". It is likely that Máire Dhall was well respected by Carolan, who wrote the tune in her honor. I wrote my own words in English.

My eyes were closed; I pondered me,
On a black and moonless night,
In wonder of God's glories seen
Without the gift of sight.

Before me showed an angel band,
And I saw Mary's face,
Her eyes most brightly shining forth
Amongst the heavenly race.

She thrummed on golden harper's strings,
Lilting strains of joy and love,
From the awe of her clear vision of
Humble blessings from above.

My eyes unveiled, I pondered on
The darkness, when did come,
A wondrous, truthful moment as
My own soul saw God's realm.
