February 16, 2002 Solid Waste (Trash) Clean Up of Peppersauce Cave By Paul Jorgenson Five cavers and Troop 264 (four adults and 12 scouts) totalling 21 people participated. There was heavy Concentration on the front part of the cave (First Lake area) and main trail to big room. We removed six large trash bags and several smaller bags of trash. The Haul included: string, cans, bottles, broken glass, candles, was, food residue, condoms, combs, clothing and fungus. Approximately 40 non-project cave visitos were seen and talked with. Many were ill prepared for the cave experience. Maybe 2/3 of those talked with were sympathetic with the problems of the cave and wanted to be part of the solution not the problem. The signs helped some, but not all, from being lost. Cave is dryer than any time in my experience. The first lake is dry - further survey may be possible. The cavers were in working for seven hours, the scouts worked for up to four and a half hours. The total volunteer value generated came to about $1970.00. Paul |

| We arrived a little after 10 AM at the cave and met up with our boy scout help (about 10 - 12). With our trash & the scouts we removed about 50 lb. of cans, broken glass, cigarette butts, batteries, flagging tape, plastic, sunflower seeds, wax..... string, waterbottle caps, and the remains of one exploded Blackcat firecracker. We left the cave at 12:30 for lunch and other essential business. The scouts left at the about same time. Paul, Jim, the new guy Matt, and I reentered the cave at 1 PM and did a little caving before moving on with cleanup duty. |

We finished the day with a few more hours of cleanup and left the cave at about 5:30 PM.
Thank you Paul for a very productive and informative trip, all in all a good day!
