THE CHILDREN of PIERRRE BOUCHER
and of JEANNE CREVIER
by Jacques DunantVersion française
TWO DAUGHTERS
1-5 MADELEINE (1661-1739)1-6 MARGUERITE (1663-1698)
They are the couple's fifth and sixth child. The time between their births is about two years and three months. Both were married to officers who served in a detachment of marine troops. They were blessed with many children. They both died at different ages after having lived lives that were quite similar, that was due to their origins and sometimes their lives were very different. Madeleine and Pierre-Noël seem to face some difficulties in establishing their roots; they reside in Boucherville, Lachenaie, return to Boucherville, Quebec, l'Île d'Orléans and finally at Saint-Antoine de Tilly. Madeleine will end her days in Montreal. As for Marguerite, who is more steadfast, passes the best part of her life surrounded by her family in Boucherville. It is probably her sister Louise who will take care of her children.
Madeleine Boucher (1661-1739) wife of Pierre-Noël Le Gardeur de Tilly
Her birth and baptism remains a mystery, Tanguay and Jetté only mention 1661, nothing else. Fleurimont Boucher de la Bruère in a manuscript he wrote about his family mentions March 11th 1661, making no reference to any legal document. I have been unable to find any documentation confirming this date; therefore I use it with some reservation. (1)
We hardly know anything of her youth and her education. As per Sister Emilia Chicoine, C.N.D. Madeleine was present when a marriage contract between Abraham Bouat and Marguerite de Nevelet, was signed before Basset, notary on March 11th 1670; (2) it is possible that she spent some time at Marguerite Bourgeoy's farm and school. It was soon after the family's arrival in Îles Percées. She must have frequented officers who were in charge of protecting the village. The first mention of her name appeared in the Boucherville register on April 26th 1671 when she is named godmother for Madeleine Loiseau, daughter of Lucas and Françoise Curé. Jean Lafon, captain for the Boucherville village is named godfather and accompanies her. (P.R.D.H.-1977) Jean Lafon had been an officer in the Carignan regiment. On September 24th 1678 Madeleine accompanied by Jean-Baptiste Ménard son of Jacques are named godmother and godfather for Madeleine Jodoin, daughter of Claude and Anne Thomas in Boucherville. (P.R.D.H.-2124)
On January 18th 1680, in the seigniorial house of Varennes, Boucherville's curate Gauthier de Brullon baptises Marie-Madeleine Aberons (Abirou), daughter of Pierre and Marie-Anne Desperney. René Gaultier de Varennes is godfather and Madeleine Boucher is godmother. (R.B.) Ten days later, another baptism occurred with the same curate in the same seigniorial house. Marie-Marguerite Gaultier de Varennes was baptized. She was the daughter of René and Marie Boucher. Pierre de Boucherville and Madeleine Boucher both children of the Seigneur of Boucherville were named godfather and godmother. (R.B.)
Before mentioning Madeleine's marriage lets say a few words about her future husband.
Pierre-Noël Le Gardeur de Tilly
Pierre Noël Le Gardeur was born on December 24th 1652, in Sillery, Quebec, son of Charles and Geneviève Juchereau. (3) This family is a renowned one; they have left many traces in our Archives. Their family is divided into two branches, Le Gardeur de Tilly whose ancestor is Charles and the Repentigny branch whose ancestor is Pierre. They all seem to have had successful marriages. Pierre-Noël de Tilly signs a marriage contract on August 11th 1675 with Marguerite Volant, daughter of Claude and Françoise Radisson. Marguerite was buried on November 23rd 1677 in Trois-Rivières leaving two daughters.
> Françoise-Charlotte born and baptized on July 1676 at Cap-de-la-Madeleine, died before 1681. (R.J.)
Geneviève-Françoise was born and baptized on September 12th 1677 in Trois-Rivières. She died on July 15th 1690 and was buried on July 16th 1690. (R.B.)Pierre-Noël joins the detachment of the marine troops and is present at diverse campaigns of de La Barre and Denonville both governors in 1684 and 1687 respectively, he becomes ensign in 1688, foot lieutenant in 1692 and captain in 1710. (4)
In a second marriage, on November 24th 1680, in Boucherville (5) he weds Madeleine Boucher, daughter of Pierre and Jeanne Crevier. Present were Captain Pierre de Saurel and Alexandre Berthier, brothers in law and Jean-Baptiste Le Gardeur his cousin, descendant of de Repentigny branch. Jacques Bourdon, notary draws the contract on November 29th. (6) By this marriage Madeleine Boucher takes charge of Geneviève- Françoise who is three and two months old. With this marriage the Boucher family joins one of the most elite families of Quebec. Charles Le Gardeur, the father sits in the Sovereign Council since 1663. (7) Pierre-Noël's two sisters marry captains in the Carignan regiment: Pierre de Saurel and Alexandre Berthier. The ancestors Pierre de Repentigny and Charles de Tilly who are brothers are proficient in the art of navigating, hunting walruses, fishing, fur trading and transporting beaver pelts to France.
Landowner Pierre-Noël Le Gardeur
He received the seignory de Maskinongé, on November 3rd 1672 with his brother. (8) He bought from Charles Aubert the seignory de Lachenaie on August 13th 1680 for the amount of 20 thousand livres. Ridden with debt, he returns it to its owner on October 3rd 1680. He is named to the Sovereign Council (9) on May 24th 1689 due to his father's absence. (He is installed on the Council in 1690) On August 31st 1700 he buys from Claude-Sébastien de Villieu the seignory de Villieu for 3000 livres. (10) This property will be called seigneurie de Tilly. He is plagued by debts during the major part of his life.
With his wife, they lived a few months at the seigniorial house of Boucherville. In 1692 they leave Boucherville to go and live in Quebec, then finally live on the seigneurie de Villieu that takes the name of seigneurie de Tilly. Madeleine Boucher who had inherited an arrière-fief at Petit-Bois in 1688 in Boucherville sold it in 1733 (11)to her nephew René Boucher de La Bruère. (1-1-8) Heiress of another arrière-fief in Boucherville, she sold it to Jacques Perrot dit Desrochers. (12)
The Legardeur-Boucher marriage draws two influential families of the colony together, even though contacts between the two families are rare. Their interests are totally different. I believe that Madeleine and Pierre-Noël received hospitality in the Boucher seigniorial house but in the 1681 census it shows them as being in Lachenaie. They return to Boucherville where many of their children will be baptized. They leave for Quebec in 1691.

Marguerite Boucher was born and baptized on June 26th 1663 in Trois-Rivières. (P.R.D.H.) Is she inscribed at the Ursulines de Quebec in the month of May 1679 for a period of about one year? (M. Trudel) She marries Nicolas Daneau de Muy (8) on May 17th 1687 in Boucherville. (R.B.) The notary Antoine Adhémar draws a contract on the same day. This ceremony which takes place at ten o'clock at night in Boucherville requires some explanations: Nicolas arrived in 1685 with his troops from the detachment of the marine whom accompany the new governor monsieur de Denonville.
Nicolas had noticed Geneviève Bissot's charm quite rapidly; she was Louis Maheu's. widow. Geneviève has a child baptized on January 6th 1686 in Lauzon and attributes its paternity to Nicolas Daneau even though he has been in the country only five months. His forsaken fiancée sues the unfaithful officer who must pay her three hundred fifty livres. All of this affair created certain rumours and explains the time at which the wedding was held. No bans appeared announcing the wedding and special permission was requested from Mgr. l'Évêque. (8) Nicolas Daneau was rapidly given the responsibility of defending Boucherville. He is a talented captain and quickly becomes friends with Pierre Boucher. Nicholas and his lieutenant Jacques-Charles Sabrevois de Bleury who seem to impress the Boucher girls, but one must not neglect to talk about his military career, which we will address later.
Nicholas and Marguerite's children were all born and baptized in Boucherville except for the fifth child due to De Muy family living in Ville-Marie.
1-6-1 Marguerite-Philippe, born on February 11th 1688, baptized on February 15th 1688, godfather was Philippe Rigaud de Vaudreuil and godmother was Jeanne Crevier. (P.R.D.H. Volume 5) The parents resided in Boucherville.

1-6-3 Marie-Josephe, born and baptized on August 13th 1690, godfather is monsieur de Callière and godmother was Marie-Ursule, widow of monsieur de Varennes. (P.R.D.H. Volume 5)
1-6-4 Madeleine, born and baptized on December 19th 1691, godfather is monsieur De Monic officer replaced by de La Vérendrye, godmother was Madeleine du Tremblet his sister. The parents reside in Boucherville. (P.R.D.H. Volume 5)

Jacques Pierre will assure the continuance of the Daneau de Muy descendants in this country. The name is still known in the Verchères region.Daneau de Muy an excellent Officer
Information was gathered from the following sources for this article: Les Cahiers des Dix, 1938 by Pierre George Roy. The Biographical Dictionary of Canada, Volume II and in the Dictionnaire Général du Canada by father Lejeune. Nicolas joins the troops around 1670. He was named lieutenant and captain in 1674, then captain in the Normandie regiment in 1678 and captain in a detachment of marine troops in Canada in 1685. He is part of a contingent of troops whom accompany the new governor de Denonville. In 1687 he takes parts in an expedition with de Denonville against the Iroquois situated close to the Frontenac fort. The campaign will last ten days in July. Four small villages are incinerated, harvests are destroyed and pigs have their throats slit. The Iroquois draw back into the interior lands. A general vengeance is expected. During this campaign Nicolas meets a few Boucher sons and Pierre-Noël Le Gardeur. At the end of the month of August 1687 some bands of Iroquois claim their vengeance in entering Fort Frontenac, Chambly, Verchères and Contrecoeur. It is the beginning of a sad bloody era. Everyone feels desperate. To add to their misfortunes in the autumn 1690 William Phipps from Boston approaches Quebec and demands that the government surrender. Luckily most of the French officers are present supporting Frontenac whose answer to the English is Par la bouche de mes canons
Then in 1696 Nicolas accompanies Pierre Lemoine d'Iberville and René Boucher de La Perrière, in part of a campaign in Terre-Neuve. (NewFoundland)
Grants of land in Boucherville
Four months after their wedding Pierre Boucher concedes to each of his two daughters Madeleine and Marguerite a grant of land in the Boucherville village. The acts of the two grants are passed before Michel Moreau, notary on September 10th 1687. First to Madeleine, wife of monsieur Le Gardeur, a grant of land in the village, bordered to the west by the major road which follows the river and to the north east by monsieur De Muy and south west a street which separates her from monsieur Louis Ménard. This parcel of land measures half an arpent on the riverfront by three arpents in depth. Witnesses are Barbot and Jacques Mousseau, habitants. They sell part of it to Mathurin Richard dit Du Sablon on March 21st 1689 (17) and they make a complete transfer of the arrière-fief to Jean Chicot (Sicotte) on September 23rd 1692. (18)
Pierre Boucher concedes to Marguerite, wife of monsieur De Muy some land in the village, bordered in the west by the major road which follows the river, and in the north east by Paul Laporte's land and in the south east by her sister Madeleine's land. This parcel of land also measures half an arpent frontal and three in depth. It also touched Jean Cicot's land and Paul Laporte
One year later Pierre Boucher's daughter Madeleine and Margerite ask their father for some more land..
N.B. (In preceding articles I have indicated that the three oldest sons had asked their father for land to start an establishment, he gave them some arrière-fiefs which permitted them to collect cens et rente ) - collect dues from farmers.
Pierre Boucher agrees and cedes to them two arrière-fiefs in the lower end of the seigneurie, therefore close to Varennes. He gives Madeleine first a three by two lieues in depth arrière-fief, which is named Petit Bois (small forest) part of the Sainte-Anne de Grandpré farm. Signed in front of notary Michel Moreau on August 21st 1688 and on August 31st 1688 before the same Moreau, he gives his daughter Marguerite four arpents by two lieues of depth aligned next to her sister Madeleine and on the other side her brother Nicolas.
On this date (August 1688) the parcels of land from Varennes up current to Boucherville limits: Nicolas Boucher has about six arpents beginning at Boucherville limits, then Marguerite wife of monsieur de Muy has four arpents, Madeleine wife of Le Gardeur has three arpents. (Petit Bois). This description will be modified a bit later. As an example, Nicolas Boucher's domain, which measured about six arpents, is reduced to five and a half arpents and will be passed on to Nicolas Daneau de Muy and Marguerite. They will be added to the four arpents that Marguerite received on August 31st 1688, which will form the fief de Muy that is known to have nine and a half by two lieues in depth. This land has remained in the family for generations, Nicolas has rented part of it which is situated between Henri Senécal and deceased Perrot dit Desrochers land to Pierre Huneau for six years. No furthur precisions are given (19)
Pierre Noël Le Gardeur's farm which is situated au Petit Bois signs a farm lease of six years to Alexandre Lacoste dit Languedoc which does not stop monsieur Le Gardeur from selling his land of the Petit Bois to Jacques Perrot dit Desrochers on September 25th 1693. Notary is Antoine Adhémar.(20) Madeleine rectifies this sale made by her husband to Jacques Perrot dit Desrochers on November 9th 1693. Genaple in Quebec. The couple reside on rue Sainte-Anne in the upper part of Quebec city. (21)
Deaths in both families
Marguerite, wife of Nicolas Daneau dies in Boucherville on June 30th 1698. She had given her husband seven children. She was thirty-five years old. She was buried in Sainte-Famille church in Boucherville on July 1st 1698. Present were her husband, monsieur de Subercase major, and monsieur de Longueuil, priests from the surrounding region. (R.B. and P.R.D.H.)
On February 18th 1702 Nicolas Daneau de Muy marries Catherine d'Ailleboust in Montreal, she is the daughter of Charles and Catherine Le Gardeur. As he is a talented officier a few posts were proposed to him, such as being commander of the Chambly Fort or as the governor of Cayenne. He considered that the Cayenne post would keep him to far from his family. He travels to France to discuss his future, which proves to be successful since they ask him to be governor of Louisiana where he would replace Bienville. Nicolas will never reach his destination since he died on La Renommée ship during his voyage to Louisiana. He was to become governor of Louisiana. He was buried in La Havane in Cuba on January 25th 1708. His widow was Catherine d'Ailleboust, daughter of Charles and of Catherine Le Gardeur (a cousin of Pierre-Noël) He also left two children.
Pierre-Noël Le Gardeur died at Saint-Antoine de Tilly in August 13th 1720 and Madeleine died on February 3rd 1739 in Montreal.
The Boucher name does not exist anymore in these two families. Research regarding the descendents of the two daughters has not been done.
