The Drouin Databse at ACGS

 by Norm Léveillée

A couple of months ago, Lucie LeBlanc Consentino wrote to me indicating that our society the American Canadian Genealogical Society - ACGS - of Manchester NH had acquired the Drouin Database in searchable, graphic format. She wrote an article in the October issue of Késsinnimek - Roots - Racines. I am quoting from that article:

The American Canadian Genealogical Society [ACGS] of Manchester, New Hampshire recently purchased the Drouin database. All of the records contained therein once belonged to the Drouin Institute of Quebec. When the Institute closed Mr. Pepin purchased all of those records as well as the rights.
He ... decided to digitize everything onto hard drives. This is what ACGS purchased.

Yesterday I accessed the database for the first time and it was just marvelous. I was able to see my grandmother’s baptismal record as it exists in the original parish register as well as the baptisms of her siblings who were all born at Ste-Anastasie, Lyster, Quebec. I accessed the marriage of her parents, my great grandparents and came across the burial of my great great grandfather at the same time.

This database also contains parish registers for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Acadia as well as Volumes XXIII & XXIV of the French Neutrals that are part of the holdings at the Massachusetts State Archives... (and) Shediac, New Brunswick. ... some Ontario

In order to use this database, we pay by the hour. For people who do not live in the area and cannot go to ACGS, records can be requested through the ACGS Research Department. However, you should have your year and place to provide so as to save on the cost.

I had planned to do research on my own in October while I was in New Hampshire. But, something prevented me from doing so. As a result, I asked Lucie if someone at the ACGS could do the research for me. There is a cost:

I sent my request along with the check to the ACGS. There were 19 records that I wished to receive and correlate with the data in my website dedicated to my

Léveillée - Bélanger Ancestors

Within a short time, I received a CDrom with the 19 graphics contained therein. I would now like to share with you several of these files and how I correlated them to my data.

The following is a copy of a page from the 1700-1759 parish register of Notre-Dame de Beauport for my 5th maternal great-grandparents:

Paul Bélanger Bellanger & Marie Jeanne Maheu
married on 4 April 1704 in Beauport, Québec

The above graphic is only the part of the page that corresponds to my ancestors' marriage record. (Top, left of the full graphic below)

The record reads as follows in French and my translation into English:

Français

From ACGS website:

An ad hoc committee of volunteers has been formed to help distant members obtain primary records from our Drouin digitized microfilm collection. If the event locations and dates are known, members can send in a list of events of which they would like to have the primary record. Our volunteers will retrieve the images of the records and place them on a CD or print out the event and mail them out to the member. The only costs involved are the charges for computer time and and a minimal charge for the images, CD and postage. For more details, visit our web page (URL below, or email us at Drouin@acgs.org. This is a great opportunity to document your family tree with primary records.

ACGS Website for more information on the Drouin Database

This is a first for genealogists to be able to access and view the pages of the original parish registers. There is a wealth of information in these registers as they were recorded at the time of the event. They are the primary sources searched for by serious genealosits. There are many secondary sources, but some of these contain errors made by the transcriber after the actual event years later.

It is worth your while to access the ACGS Website and find out how you can gain access to the graphics of these primary sources.

If anyone needs assistance, I am available both to request a search, to actually retrieve pages and to translate the French into English. Contact me for information and fees at:
