Bl. Kateri Commemorative Postmark

by Norm Léveillée

I received the following email from Theresa Schweigert:

Dear Mr. Leveillee,

I would like to invite you to come to two very special events taking place in the Mohawk Valley of New York State this summer.

In honor of the 350th Anniversary of the Birth of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, the Tekakwitha League in Auriesville, NY and the National Kateri Shrine in Fonda, NY have created special commemorative postmarks.

On Sunday, July 2, 2006 and Sunday, July 9th, the US Postal Service will set up temporary post offices at the Kateri Shrine in Fonda and at the Martyrs Shrine in Auriesville to hand cancel letters and cards and other memorabilia using the special postmarks.

In addition, there will be specially printed envelopes (cachets) bearing stunningly beautiful portraits of Bl. Kateri done by renown artists Joe Izzillo (Fonda) from Naples, Florida and Bob Renaud (Auriesville) from Carthage, New York. These envelopes with the commemorative postmarks will be available at the shrines on July 2nd and July 9th for two dollars each.

For anyone wishing to purchase them by mail, please write to:

National Kateri Shrine
PO Box 627
Fonda, NY 12068-0627

Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha League
136 Shrine Road
Auriesville, NY 12016

Please include $2.00 for each specially cancelled pictorial envelope.
Send your request early as supply will be limited.

Here is a sample of what the envelopes will look like:

For anyone wishing to obtain just the souvenir postmark, they should address their request to:

Postmaster Kate Reynolds
Special Pictorial Cancellation
Fonda, NY 12068

OR

Postmaster Gary Capel
Special Pictorial Cancellation
Fultonville, NY 12072

Enclose an envelope with 39 cents postage on it for the special postmark. Please be sure to include an additional self-addressed envelope with correct postage so that the postmaster can mail the souvenir envelope back to the person.

We see this endeavor as a wonderful way to promote interest in Bl. Kateri from a cultural, as well as a religious perspective, and to inspire people to learn more about her life. These souvenir envelopes are appealing to prayer groups and religious education classes and of course hobbyists and stamp enthusiasts from all over the world.

We hope that this project would be of interest to you and would appreciate any publicity you could provide. Thank you for your help and most importantly for your prayers as we join with the Lily of the Mohawks in bearing witness for our faith in this unique and creative fashion.

God bless you.

Sincerely,

Theresa Schweigert
