Adventures of Superman #620
First, Tom Palmer Jr. asked me to do something with Superman using his powers; either heat vision or super breath.
First sketch

I wasn't crazy about that sketch, so I tried a different layout.
Second sketch

Tom called and said they'd decided to make this one look more like the cover for Adventures of Superman #619. Click here if you don't remember what it looks like.
Adventures of Superman #619

I was more than happy to oblige since I wasn't getting anywhere with the previous sketches. Not only that, but this is the second and final chapter of the story that began in in issue 619, so it makes sense for them to have a similar look. Here's a thumbnail I sent DC. Superman is in front of a blazing sun and he's using his heat vision.

They liked it but asked me to move his arm down.
I drew a tighter sketch on a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11" paper and firmed up some of the details.
Pencil prelim

Then I enlarged it to the size of the finished art and started penciling. As I was drawing his eyes, I started thinking about lighting and decided to put one side of the figure in shadow to make it more dramatic and to make the eye beams stand out.
Finished pencils

Even though the pencils weren't very tight, I decided to start inking and see where I ended up.
Finished inks

Here's the final color version. I went through several variations on the background colors.
