John B. Conway was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, receiving his B.S. from Loyola of the South and his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. From 1965-1990 he was on the faculty of Indiana University, and then he went to the University of Tennessee to be department head, a position he occupied until the summer of 2003 when he came to DMS as a rotator.

His research interests include function theoretic operator theory, the interface of analytic function theory and operator theory, as well as non-commutative approximation theory, which, simplistically put, looks at the closures of various sets of operators on Hilbert space.
