Deborah Lockhart received her B.A. in Mathematics from New York University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. From 1973-76 she was an instructor and assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at SUNY, College of Geneseo, prior to her appointments (assistant professor, associate professor) in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Michigan Technological University from 1976 to 1991. She joined the NSF’s Division of Mathematical Sciences as a program director in the Special Projects Program in 1988. In 1991, she became a permanent member of the DMS staff and in 1993, she became a program director in the Applied Mathematics Program.
