Executive Officer

Bernard “Bernie” McDonald joined the National Science Foundation in 1983. He has served as Program Director for the Algebra and Number Theory Program, Program Director for the Special Projects Program, Head of the Office of Special Projects, and Executive Officer/Deputy Division Director (since 1988) of the Division of Mathematical Sciences. In 1995-96, he served on detail as Senior Staff Associate of the NSF Office of Policy Support in the Office of the NSF Director. Since the fall of 2002, he has been serving on detail as Senior Advisor in the NSF Budget Division where he is handling assessment activities for NSF, in particular, the NSF Advisory Committee for GPRA Performance Assessment.

Born in Kansas, he received a BA from Park College in 1962, an MA from Kansas State University in 1964, and a PhD from Michigan State University in 1968. Upon completion of his Ph.D., he joined the faculty of the University of Oklahoma for 16 years, being promoted to Professor in 1978. He served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics from 1981 –1984 and as Chair of the University of Oklahoma Faculty Senate in 1978-79. He has held visiting appointments at University of California at Santa Barbara, Pennsylvania State University, and Queen’s University (Canada).

His research interests are in combinatorics, quadratic forms, commutative algebra, and linear groups. His publications include six graduate books and edited proceedings, one Memoir of the American Mathematical Society, and twenty-three research papers. Among his NSF awards are the Director’s Distinguished Service Award (1999) and the Director’s Meritorious Service Award (1995) that represent the two highest honorary awards conferred by the National Science Foundation on its employees. In 1999, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Mathematics at Kansas State University. He is a member of the U.S. Government’s Senior Executive Service.
