Program Director
Infrastructure
Richard Millman graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. in
Mathematics from Cornell University.
His research has been in the areas of Riemannian geometry
(especially the space of Riemannian manifolds and spectral geometry),
holomorphic connections on manifolds, and mathematics education
(especially writing as a tool to learn mathematics).
With co-authors, he has dabbled in control theory and mathematical physics.
He has co-authored, with George Parker, the books
Elements of Differential Geometry, Prentice-Hall (1977),
Calculus: A Practical Introduction, McGraw-Hill (1979),
Geometry: An Axiom and Models Approach, Springer-Verlag (1991),
and about 40 research articles.
In addition, he and an undergraduate, Ramona Speranza, were the recipients of a 1992 Excel
first place Award in the category of Scholarly Journals, Feature Article, for their article
"Artist's View of Points and Lines," which appeared in Mathematics Teacher.
Dr. Millman has also held administrative positions as Dean of Science and Mathematics (Wright State University), Provost (California State University, San Marcos and Whittier College), and President (Knox College —- a highly selective national liberal arts in Galesburg, Illinois). He is on leave at N.S.F. from Knox College, where he is a Professor of Mathematics.
