Kindergarten Computer Overview
1st Quarter - Keyboarding
- Class 1-9: Keyboarding Readiness
- Students will be introduced to the PC Lab or Laptop carts
- Students will learn how to use the Shortcuts
to access the programs used
- Students will use a combination of programs to learn keyboard readiness
- Students will focus on letter recognition and location on the keyboard
2nd Quarter - Curriculum Software
- Class 10-18: Reading & Math Readiness
- Students will focus on counting, sequencing, alphabet order, letter sounds,
patterns
3rd Quarter - Multimedia & Painting Programs
- Class 19-27: Various Multimedia Programs
- Students will be introduced to the concept of multimedia
- Students will learn how to
use menus for tools and colors
- Students will learn how to select Open & New from File Menu
- Students will learn how to select Undo from the Edit Menu
- Paintbrush tool
- Paint bucket tool for filling in enclosed areas
- Arrow tool for selecting items from the menus
- Eraser only when erasing a small area
- Magnifying glass tool for coloring in areas too small for the paint bucket
4th Quarter - Applications
- Class 28-31: Kid Pix
- Students will learn how to use the specialty brushes
- Students will learn how to use & change stamp sets
- Class 32-34: Storybook Weaver
- Students will learn how to choose backgrounds
- Students will learn how to add clip art to the scene
- Class 35-36: Primary Games
- Students will have an opportunity to explore some other primary games just for fun

1st Grade Computer Overview
1st Quarter - Keyboarding
- Class 1-9: Keyboarding
- Students will learn to use the keyboarding program available
- Students will work at their own pace focusing on correct hand placement
- Students will become used to not looking at the keyboard
2nd Quarter - Curriculum Software
- Class 10-18: Reading & Math
- Students will use a combination of programs to work on word & number skills
- Students will focus on reading and addition readiness
3rd Quarter - Multimedia & Painting Programs
- Class 19-27: Multimedia
- Line Tool - used for creating a simple horizon line in their drawings
- Spray Paint Can - used for adding soft shading to spheres or clouds
- Circle & Box Tools - used for making areas that may be filled with colors or patterns they have edited
- Filled Circle Tool - used for making snowmen on a dark blue background, the sun in a light blue sky, a crescent moon on a pitch black night, grapes, or a color wheel
- Filled Box Tool - used for making brick houses, color wheels with square blocks
- Pencil Tool - used for adding small details to self portraits such as eye lashes, adding the "pricklies" on cactus, or for creating a mountainous horizon line
- Text Tool - used for adding names or short sentences to their pictures
- Using Control > and Control < to move forward and backward through cards without buttons
- Double-Clicking on the line and brush tools to change the size or shape
- Selecting Draw Filled from the Option Menu
4th Quarter - Applications
- Class 28-30: Kid Pix
- Students will learn how to use the specialty brushes to create scenes
- Students will learn how to use & change stamp sets to create math story problems
- Students will learn how to use & change stamp sets to create pictographs
- Students will learn how to use & change stamp sets to create sets of ten





- Class 31-34: Storybook Weaver
- Students will choose backgrounds that will support their classroom writing
- Students will add clip art to the scene that further supports their writing
- Students will add text to the completed scene with capitalization and punctuation
- Class 35-36: Primary Games
- Students will have an opportunity to explore some other primary games just for fun

2nd Grade Computer Overview
1st Quarter - Keyboarding
- Class 1-9: Keyboarding
- Students will continue to use the keyboarding program available
- Students will work at their own pace focusing on building on previous work
2nd Quarter - Research Skills
- Class 10-18: Internet Research
- Students will learn how to do online searches based on classroom curriculum
- Students will focus on picking out important facts for handwritten notetaking
- Students will learn how to open up a word processing document, copy and paste important facts from the website to the document

Students will learn about copyright law
3rd Quarter - Multimedia & Painting Programs
- Class 19-27: Multimedia
- Editing Box - used for erasing areas or moving clip art or pasted down text
- Lasso - used for capturing clip art (This is a skill on which we spend several sessions in a variety of ways because it is one of the most difficult to master and the most useful.)
- Using Load Background from the File Menu (We load a background like a tree, and then practice lassoing clip art to create a scene)
- Using Save Screen from the File Menu in order to save their drawings
- Using Save As... from the File Menu in order to create their
projects
- Getting the students used to saving and naming their work
4th Quarter - Applications
- Class 28-30: Kid Pix
- Students will use this program for curricular connections
- Math
- Social Studies
- Science
- Class 31-34: ClarisWorks, AppleWorks or Microsoft Word
- Students will be introduced to word processing
- Students will learn how to start a document, change fonts & sizes
- Students will learn how to save their work on the hard drive
- Students will create acrostic NAME poems to which they will add clip art
- Students will learn more about the scrapbooks (Mac), and word processing graphic libraries





- Class 35-36: Primary Games
- Students will have an opportunity to explore some other primary games just for fun
