
Students in Grades 4 through 7 are introduced to crocheting
This activity satisfies the following State Standards:
- C7 for Visual Design and Production:
Students will develop basic skills to produce quality art
- E1 for Visual Communication and Expression:
Students will communicate basic ideas by producing studio art forms, such as drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, jewelry, fibers, and ceramics
- E3 for Visual Communication and Expression:
Students will communicate basic ideas by producing traditional arts and crafts
- H4 for Visual Thinking:
Students will create three-dimensional forms with paper, clay, and other materials
- I7 for Personal and Social Development:
Students will work alone and with others to develop visual ideas and objects
- J1 for Cultural and Aesthetic Understanding:
Students will explore the purposes and functions of art
Objectives:
- Students will learn to make a slip knot
- Students will learn to work single crochets to build rows
- Students will learn about online resources
- Students will learn that it is necessary to measure and count in order to keep a piece straight
- Students will show an understanding of:
- Spatial relationships
- Finger manipulation
- Hand-eye coordination
- Concentration
- Students will respect each other's level of ability and way of working
- Students will understand the collaborative nature of sharing the pieces
- Students will learn the historic, practical, and charitable value of this activity

- Students will learn that this is an inexpensive, portable, and relaxing activity
- Students will get a sense of accomplishment by contributing to the larger goal
All the pieces went home with me for Christmas break.
I added an edging to each and stitched them together.
The finished afghan was auctioned in order to help raise funds for the school,
giving all students a sense of accomplishment in the finished piece.
