Versals and Calligraphy

In this day of using the computer to write everything, we are in danger of losing that which is uniquely human; our handwriting. In order for students to appreciate this, we look back to the beginning of letterforms and the history behind calligraphy as an artform. Students create decorated letters and learn how to use calligraphic pens to form letters.

From the Ordinary to the Extraordinary: Creating Birds from Pencils

This exercise deals with translating a common object into something entirely different. There are many possible combinations of inorganic objects to organic objects and vice/versa. Students spent time examining a brand new pencil and were encouraged to distort and manipulate the pencil into shapes that would suit a bird. Each solution was unique and promoted individual creativity.

Changing Your Point of View: The Close-Up

This exercise deals with looking at common objects from a different point of view. Students were required to draw each object from a close-up view and to include overlapping to help create some depth and to crop the objects so that they ran off the edge of the paper.
