The books here are available for purchase through Amazon.com. Amazon.com offers low prices and great service. I've been a satisfied Amazon.com customer since they first came online. When you click on a book's "Buy This Book" link, you'll go to the book's Amazon.com page. There, you can view information about the book and decide if you'd like to purchase it. Note that clicking on the "Buy This Book" link does NOT commit you to purchase; it merely takes you to the Amazon.com page for that book.

Please feel free to offer feedback about my selections. You can e-mail me at NurseBobbi AT cox DOT net. Thanks for stopping in. I hope you find something you like, but if you don't find exactly what you're looking for, you can search Amazon.com using the link below.!

The Book Publishing Company

Joanne Stepaniak is a genius. Vegans who miss cheese and are disappointed by the few truly vegan cheese alternatives on the market will be ecstatic when they discover this book. In addition to dairyless "cheezes," Joanne gives us an array of basics for the vegan kitchen. Make your own seasoning powders, Worchestershire sauce, tofu mayo and sour cream, etc. This book helped me satisfy my craving for Greek Salad without using feta and brought Dutch Potato Cheese soup back into my kitchen in vegan form. Companion Guide to Healthy Cooking

By Natalie and Shirley Nigro
Featherstone & Brown

This guide to natural ingredients was written by a mother/daughter team who have spent seven years studying and practicing healthful eating. This is a wonderful reference, particularly for those new to natural foods. It answers all those questions which new and aspiring vegetarians have about natural ingredients (aka "weird food") that we often use. Ingredients are listed alphabetically and each entry includes pronunciation and information about varieties, other names, flavor/texture, general uses, freshness/quality, storage, preparation instructions, health information, additional reading, buying sources, and where applicable, brand names. The book contains many helpful charts, tables, and diagrams, as well as a glossary, a list of references, and information on mail order sources. This book is a must for people who are new to natural foods or who wish to expand their usage of these ingredients. Buy the Book!

How to Feed a Vegetarian

by Suzanne D'Avalon
Placidly Amid the Noise

Suzanne D'Avalon has written How to Feed a Vegetarian, a cookbook aimed at non-vegetarian cooks who find themselves cooking for us. The ingredients included are those which can generally be found in mainstream supermarkets. In addition to the many recipes, the author offers basic information about the "what" and "why" of vegetarianism. She also includes a "guide to weird food," tips on seasonings, sample menus, some basic nutrition information, and a "frequent guest checklist" for tracking what the guest does and doesn't eat. I haven't had a chance to test the recipes, but they look good. They contain no flesh food, dairy products, or eggs. Honey is used occasionally. I'm fairly certain that I will be testing these recipes in the future. My mother-in-law, an excellent veg-friendly cook, saw the book at my house and immediately ordered one. Buy the Book!

Nutrition Secrets for Optimal Health

by Betsy Kurleto, RD, MA and Beverly Price, RD, MA
Tall Tree Publishing Company

Nutrition Secrets for Optimal Health is written by two vegetarian registered dietitians and exercise physiologists, Betsey Kurleto, R.D., M.A. and Beverly Price, R.D., M.A. The main "secret" here is, of course, no secret to vegetarians--a lowfat vegan diet. Nutrition Secrets is loaded with nutrition information as well as practical advice for setting up a vegetarian kitchen and making the change to vegetarian cooking and eating. One of my favorite parts of this book is "The Art of Throwing a Meal Together." This is a topic that gives many new vegetarians pause, but veteran veggies have been doing it so long that we find it difficult to know where to start explaining it to those in need. The section lists the two categories--Protein & Starch and Vegetables--and the numbers of servings to choose from each for one meal. Then you add Sauces as needed, Toppings as desired, and Seasonings. General directions are also provided for making soups, stew, stir-fries, casseroles, and main dish salads choosing from the ingredient lists. Buy the Book!

Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats

by Richard H. Pitcairn, D.V.M., Ph.D. and Susan Hubble Pitcairn
Rodale Press

This book isn't vegetarian, but it's a great introduction to natural health care for your companion dogs and cats. Vegetarianism is addressed and the book does include homemade vegetarian dog food recipes. The book stresses preventative health maintenance and offers alternative and complementary treatments for problems using homeopathy and herbs. There is a section on emergency care as well. I've consulted this book many times over the years of caring for my canine companions, Levi and Toni. Buy the Book!
