Friends' Websites & Favorite Links
Canine CompanionshipDave and I have lived with at least one canine (usually two and currently four) for over seventeen years. We often look at each other and ask, "What did we do before we had dogs?" These are my favorite dog-related websites. This is just a start. I'll have more to come, plus I'll add book recommendations to my book page. Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc. rescues, fosters, and adopts Labrador Retrievers. Dave and I have been volunteering for Lab Rescue since the spring of 2000. Our dogs, Sam, Bonnie, and Lucy, were adopted through Lab Rescue after coming to us as foster dogs. Lab Rescue is always in need of volunteers, especially for foster homes and helping transport dogs. If you're interested in volunteering or in learning about adoption (or if you have a Labrador Retriever you must find a new home for), please visit the website for more information. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers - All dogs need training, and the APDT is a great way to find a trainer who uses positive training methods. Working with Lab Rescue, I've noticed that many dogs are given up by their owners because of behavioral issues. However, few of those dogs have ever had professional obedience training. If they have, it's rare that the owners have continued to reinforce the training. How can we expect dogs to function in our world if we don't teach them what we expect of them? Even if you're not a dog trainer, you can join APDT as a subscription member and receive their excellent newsletter. I highly recommend it! Whole Dog Journal is a monthly subscription-supported (ie--free of ads) magazine devoted to positive training and natural dog care. It contains great information about health, training, nutrition, and dog-related products. I read every issue cover to cover and keep them all. C&C Pals -- Certified pet dog trainer (and APDT member) Carole Peeler is in Northern Virginia. We consulted her about some behavioral concerns we had with Sam and Bonnie. She's knowledgeable, professional, and good with both dogs and people! Following her plan, Bonnie is making great progress riding comfortably in the car without showing stress or vomiting. Once Bonnie can ride far enough for classes, we'll be going to Carole's basic obedience class. Sam is handling the sight of strangers on walks much better, too. Dale City Animal Hospital and Gunston Animal Hospital are our vets. We started out at Dale City, then our vet Terri Levinstein and her partner Allison Mayo bought Gunston. We like the doctors and staff at both hospitals. Gunston is one of the vets that Lab Rescue works with. Solid Gold is a company that makes food and training treats that we've used with Sam and Bonnie. We saw a big change in our dog Toni's skin and ears when we switched her to Solid Gold when she was about 11 years old. Our friend Molly's dog Dino has also had remarkable skin improvement with the food. Washingtonian magazine's Pet Care feature recommends the best vets, pet sitters, groomers, trainers, kennels, etc. in the metro Washington area. Friends on the WebMy husband Dave is my best friend. Visit his Two Guys & a Map Home Page for an account of his baseball travels with his friend DC. Dave's friend, DC, is Douglas Cohn, a family law attorney and mediator in Bethesda, Maryland. You'll find his website at famlawmd.com. Perry Lowell lives online in Massachusetts. Her web design and publishing site is called Small Addictions. Through her site, you can visit cool places she designed and managed such as SKATEboard, Microsoft Network's Cooking Community, and the UnderWire e-zine on MSN. The Mail Order Catalog in Summertown, TN has been offering healthy vegetarian foods and vegetarian cookbooks by mail order for over 15 years. I met Cynthia Holzapfel online, but have actually met her in person, too. I contributed the introduction to Tasty Bytes Cookbook, edited by Cynthia and published by MOC's sister company, The Book Publishing Company. The book is a compilation of recipes from Internet vegetarians. Proceeds from the book will be donated to non-profit organizations which promote vegetarianism. Contributing authors will determine where the contributions will go. Tasty Bytes Cookbook is available for purchase through Amazon.com or from The Mail Order Catalog. Jay Lavine, M.D. is a vegan ophthalmologist known on AOL as Sauromalus. His AOL site offers information on vegetarian nutrition and his views on medical ethics. I'm an admirer of the work of Joss Whedon. He created Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly for television and Serenity, a feature film with the cast of Firefly. To find out what's up with Joss and the casts and crews of his shows, visit Whedonesque:
Rock & RollDave and I have both been rock'n'roll fans and record collectors as long as we can remember. These are some of our favorite online music sites.
Web PublishingIt's obvious that HTML is one of my hobbies. Thus far, I haven't used webpage software of any kind; I write HTML in Notepad. Here are some resources that I found helpful when I set out to create my website. Sometimes I wonder what percentage of the web was built by people who learned to write HTML from Laura Lemay. Her books were clearly written and easy to follow. Her advice on web design and writing was excellent. Don't blame her, though, if I've broken some of her rules. Sadly, she is no longer writing tech books; others are doing the revisions. Laura Lemay has an interesting personal home page. Find out what the standards are and what the future holds for HTML at The HTML Home Page. The World Wide Web Consortium offers a HTML validation service. I learned a lot by putting my pages through this process. My web counter is a free service of WebCounter
Back to SchoolI graduated in August 2001 from Northern Virginia Community College. Many of the courses I took to earn my degree are offered via distance learning through Nova Online. In the Fall of 2001, I transfered to George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I graduated in May of 2003 with a B.A. in English with a concentration in Nonfiction Writing and Editing. While at NVCC, I was inducted into the international honor society for two-year colleges, Phi Theta Kappa. Through my campus's Alpha Beta Rho chapter, I began volunteering as a peer writing consultant. I also served as the chapter Secretary and Webmaster. I met a lot of great people and had a wonderful time. Many four-year universities offer scholarships for Phi Theta Kappa students. GMU offers four such scholarships each fall that cover about half of each recipient's tuition for two years. I was one of the lucky recipients for Fall 2001! I started a new adventure in the fall semeser of 2005--graduate school at Michigan State University. I'm in the College of Nursing's MSN program in Nursing Education. The program is part-time and all classes are held online. Clinical and academic internships take place in the student's home community, so I'll still be here in Springfield, not in East Lansing. In April of 2007, I was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society of nursing.
