A Message from Cecil Bykerk
I have committed my career to one of life-long volunteerism while serving as a senior officer of a major insurance company. Serving as President of the Society of Actuaries would allow me to apply those skills to enhance the actuarial profession. If I have the privilege to be your President-Elect, I will commit the necessary time and energy to help the Society reach its goals and objectives.
We must continue to provide a superior education system attracting the best and the brightest. We are nearing completion of the implementation of the 2005 education changes which have added quality and stability while supporting the concept of life-long learning, but we must continue to make sure it is a superior system. The International Actuarial Association is developing an International Education Program which will focus primarily on developing countries. While being supportive of this effort, the SOA must be careful to not allow it to interfere with our system.
A specific strategic initiative with respect to the International Education Program needs to be added. We must redouble our efforts regarding our image. We must make major strides in promoting and improving the communication skills of actuaries. We must be seen as broad thinkers who are creative while being appropriate risk takers. We must be seen as the ideal professionals to serve as enterprise risk managers. Our newly created Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst credential has the potential to help us move in that direction. We need to get actuaries out front, as people who can be viewed as leaders, people with vision and as people who can help make changes in society and benefit society in a positive way as well as from a business perspective.

We need committed, effective, efficient and visionary leadership. Leaders need to be experienced yet vital. They must be consensus builders to drive success in the diverse and splintered actuarial community we have in North America. My track record and diverse experiences demonstrate I am such a leader. Current actuarial leadership has made significant strides in the last year toward moving the actuarial community closer together. I will continue that effort.
