About the Crystal Cathedral Arboretum Organ
The Frederick Swann Concert Organ is Opus 1141 of the AEolian- Skinner Organ Company. It was designed and voiced by G. Donald Harrison, and originally installed in the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Beverly Hills, CA in 1951. The Northridge Earthquake did major damage to the church building, but fortunately the organ was spared. The Crystal Cathedral purchased the organ in 1996 and has been restored and installed in the Arboretum by the Cathedral Organ Curators. The organ consists of 82 ranks, and 4,949 pipes played form a four manual console. With the exception of a few digital percussion stops and a new Solid State Logic combination action, the organ is exactly as G. Donald Harrison designed and voiced it fifty years ago.

A theatre organ second only in size to Radio City Music Hall's organ. Owner Dick Loderhose did something different. He took an 800-seat theater and reduced the seating to half its capacity, so he could install a Wurlitzer pipe organ which encompasses the Jesse Crawford studio organ from New York City, Times Square. He obtained the most heard organ in the world, according to his research.

The Artist
Internationally acclaimed concert organist, Dr. Janet Harms, has performed across the United States and in Bermuda and has presented over eighty recitals in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Italy. At age thirteen she was awarded a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Dr. Harms continued her education, earning advanced degrees from the American Conservatory (Chicago) and Columbia University, where she received her doctorate as a student of Leonard Raver. Prior to her appointment as Professor of Organ at Biola in the fall of 1999, she taught at Nyack College (N.Y.), Azusa Pacific University and the University of Redlands. For the last ten years she has served as Organist at Fuller Theological Seminary and Arcadia Presbyterian Church. In September 2000 she was appointed Organist-in-Residence at Calvary Church of Pacific Palisades and Professor of Organ at Azusa Pacific University. As an organ soloist, Dr. Harms has performed with the Erie Philharmonic, Walter Hendl, conductor; Redlands Symphony, Jon Robertson, conductor; and recently as soloist in the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony for the dedication of the new organ at Azusa Pacific University. In addition, she has been a featured soloist in many southland churches, including the Crystal Cathedral, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church of Newport Beach and First Congregational Church of Los Angeles.
Equally at home on the conductor's podium and at the organ console, Dr. Harms has pursued a dual career as a choral conductor. She is the founder and artistic director of the seventy-five voice Windsong Southland Chorale of Ontario begun in 1995. Windsong has performed throughout the southland and in June 1999 presented the New York debut of Morton Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna at Carnegie Hall. A return engagement in June 2001 at Carnegie Hall featured the group's participation in Peter Tiboris' presentation of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and their own New York debut of Stephen Paulus' Embracing All. The concert also included Gloria by Rene Claussen. The Chorale was recently honored to perform at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga for 5,000 people at a memorial tribute to the victims of the New York tragedy. The group will return to Carnegie Hall in June 2002 to sing the Poulenc Gloria with full orchestra under Maestra Harms' baton.
Dr. Harms' CD, "The Nordic Sound," featuring Scandinavian organ music is available from Gothic Records and the Biola bookstore. Also available is her CD, "Hymns from My Heart," a collection of favorite hymns arranged for piano.
