Ocmulgee Audubon Society

Of Macon and the Middle Georgia Area

The mission of the National Audubon Society is "to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity." The Ocmulgee Audubon Society (OAS) is one of the 508 Audubon chapters in the Americas that share a similar mission.
Ocmulgee Audubon Society was founded in 1972 and currently has about 300 members in the 14 counties of middle Georgia. The OAS offers opportunities for interested people to learn about Georgia's natural resources and conservation issues and to meet other people who enjoy exploring Georgia's woods, fields, and wetlands. The symbol of the group is the federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis), which breeds in the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge of middle Georgia. The "RCW," as it is fondly called, also graces the front page of our monthly newsletter, The Fall Line.

OAS Meetings

The OAS meets the second Monday of every month (except July) at 7:30 pm. Meetings are held in the auditorium of the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences, 4182 Forsyth Road, Macon, Georgia and they are open to the public. Visitors are welcome to attend.
If you have a suggestion for a speaker or activity for our monthly meeting, or if you have a program you would like to present yourself, please contact Jim Gilreath (Vice President)

478-474-5911.

OAS Field Trips

Field trips are usually scheduled for the Saturday after the monthly meeting. You don't have to be an experienced birder to go on one of these field trips. Non-members and novices are always welcome to attend. Bring your binoculars and field guide(s) and whatever other gear is seasonally appropriate (e.g., bug spray, sunscreen, trailworthy shoes or boots, etc.).
Field trips aren't just about birds. Participants often get sidetracked by interesting plants, butterflies, amphibians--you name it. Children are welcome but children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Occasionally an overnight trip to places such as Sapelo Island is scheduled. Please check the current newletter for information.
