RACQUET CLUB NEWSLETTER

JULY 2009

Our fourth meeting of the year will be on Wednesday, July 8 – 4:00 social/4:30 general meeting.  Our meetings are usually lively events when we discuss our upcoming activities, issues, and other matters of interest–and Mama Lyn surprises with great meeting refreshments!

The weather was overcast to sunny–great for tennis!  Two teams, Blue vs. Red, battled it out in the latest tennis tournament on Saturday, May 16.  There were 11 players on each team, and the one winning the most games was the victor.  After the dust settled and our scorekeeper, Ken Heist, counted up the games, the Blue team won by 6 points (games).  The Subway lunch was great, and the cold lemonade, soda, water or beer all tasted wonderful after a morning of fierce tennis.  The added prizes donated by Lois and Allan Singer were won by Suchiko Okada, pendant made by Lois Singer; margarita glasses were won by Ana Yoshida; and the wine was won by the two Linda’s–Notholt and Getz-Heller.  Of course, the winning team players all got little battery-operated red, white, and blue fans to help cool them down after fighting so hard to win.  Judging from the laughter, joking, and bragging, everyone enjoyed themselves.  Jane Aldrich and Dee Ploss put it all together and appreciated the many helpers…and we all thank Dee and Jane for all their hard work in heading up the tournament!

On Memorial Day, approximately 30 energetic volleyball players hit the pool with a vengeance to celebrate the holiday and kick off the sport for 2009!  Judging by their enthusiasm, they had looked forward to this first pool volleyball event for months!  Afterward about 55 people enjoyed a barbecue potluck dinner coordinated by Joyce Malloy.  Our official water volleyball schedule started on Monday, June 1, and will be ongoing every Monday from 3:00-5:00 p.m.   This is always “weather permitting” and is tentatively scheduled to go through November.

Our club’s summer lanai party, “La Vita Dolce” (The Sweet Life!) is scheduled for Saturday, August 15.  Ticket sales will be announced to our club members via email, and attendance is usually sufficient to guarantee a great time by all party-goers!  Joan Gross and her volunteers will head up the event, and she has DJ Robin Uncapher on board to entertain us at this “Italian style” dinner and party event.
