Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China was established originially as a defensive mechanism, to keep the Xiongnu warriors out of China. Today it is a UNESCO world heritage site, and popular tourist destination in China. It was originally built in the 5th Century and was maintained until about the 16th Century. Now, however, many sections of the wall have been destroyed for construction, used to fix houses and roads, or have fallen into disrepair. The sections in popular tourist areas, though, have been well-kept, so that visitors like yourself can enjoy the Wall. The Great Wall was one of the greatest feats of it's time, even classified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A sight like this does not happen all the time, so it is best to take advantage of it as it lasts. The Great Wall is approximately 4,000 miles long, an impressive sight for any visitor. As I mentioned, it was built as a fortification against attack. While the wall was in service it was maintained by more than 1 million men. Today, it has been graced by over 1 million tourists. The Wall was actually an improvement on other concepts used to protect the Chinese from battle. However, the other walls were mostly rammed earth. The problem with this technique is that the walls were flimsy, and subsequently easy to break through. The improvements, however, were stone fortifications, so that the enemy was not able to easily attack China.
