Those who serve are always in our thoughts
I want American men and women who serve in the United States military to
know something. I want them to know I care.
The war you fight may at times be with your own conscience. The battles you wage
may end up in your own hearts. You will find the ferocity you possess to survive
to be a terrifying thing. You will win; You will persevere.
When you shiver in bitter cold, sweat in unbearable heat, fight exhaustion from a week with only 1 to 2 hours sleep per day...When you are just too tired to even remember your own name, when you wonder if you even WANT to go on, know that I was there before you, and you will be OK. I have known that I would be dead before the next light....I too, had nobody to say "goodbye" to when the END was staring me in the face.
I am thankful for your sacrifice. I respect what you do to make my
freedom safe and secure. I need you to know you are not alone. I do not go a day
without thinking of you. I do not go a minute without worrying about you. I do
not go a second taking you for granted. My freedom is something I have also
fought for. I want your journey to end knowing your country and everyone in it
supports and cares deeply for you, no matter the politics.
For the first time in nearly 36 years (Since Viet Nam) I can appreciate all I
have. What our servicemen and women have given me is priceless. Freedom has a
price, yet it truly is priceless.
I need you to know it will be all right. You will come home; you will
turn around and be feeling what I am feeling someday. You will be too old to
fight, yet too young to just sit there. So, you'll write a letter no one may
ever read, but you'll write it anyway. You will care, you will hope and you will
pray.
